Data roaming

Important notice about domestic data use while off the T‑Mobile network

As of April 5, 2012 there is a limit on the amount of data that can be used while a T‑Mobile customer’s device is connected to another provider’s network (“off-network” or “domestic roaming”). Customers that are domestically roaming will receive free text message usage alerts once they reach 80% and 100% of their domestic data roaming allotment. If the domestic data roaming allotment is reached, then data service will be unavailable until the customer returns to a T‑Mobile coverage area, the next bill cycle begins, or the customer changes their full-speed data allotment (temporarily or permanently) to an option that includes more domestic data roaming. This does not impact: (1) voice usage, and (2) data usage on the T‑Mobile network.

To determine domestic roaming areas, see the T‑Mobile data coverage map by visiting www.T‑Mobile.com/Coverage.html. If you have a T‑Mobile ONE™ plan, or activated a simple Choice™ plan on or after November 15, 2015, your domestic data roaming allotment is 200MB. If you signed up for T‑Mobile before November 15, 2015 and don’t have a T‑Mobile ONE™ plan, the chart below outlines the domestic data roaming allotment associated with each full-speed data allotment option. To use this chart, review the left column to identify the megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB) included in your current data plan option, and then see the domestic data roaming allotment that applies on the right. If you don’t know what your full-speed allotment is for your data option, find out by reviewing your Plan page on my.T‑Mobile.com (check out the line that says “Data Service”), by reviewing the Available Service Section on page 1 of your bill (ex: Classic Simple 200MB Data Promo) or by dialing #WEB# send from your mobile phone.

If Your Current Full Speed Data Allotment is...                                Then Your Domestic Data Roaming Allotment is....

Off-network data use may occur even when you are within the T-Mobile coverage area. See your device’s user manual for directions on how to update device settings to avoid domestic roaming. Many user manuals are available online from T-Mobile Support.

Review Sections 3-5 of T-Mobile’s Terms and Conditions available at T-Mobile.com for information on your rights (which may include early service cancellation) as a T-Mobile customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

To continue providing the most competitive pricing options in the industry, T-Mobile introduced a domestic data roaming allotment on all data plans. Very few customers will use enough domestic data while roaming to be impacted by this change. Domestic roaming allotments are used across the wireless industry and so this is common with other carriers as well.
The best way to determine your active network is to go into the handset settings and look for the mobile network or phone status options. This specific process varies by device and we advise you consult your user guide  for details. In addition, you can review the T-Mobile coverage map prior to traveling to determine if your destination is within the T-Mobile coverage area. See www.t-mobile.com/coverage.html
This depends on your data plan option and when you signed up for T-Mobile. If you have a T-Mobile ONETM plan, or activated a Simple ChoiceTM plan on or after November 15, 2015, your domestic data roaming allotment is 200MB. If you signed up for T-Mobile before November 15, 2015 and don’t have a T-Mobile ONETM plan, in general, the larger your full-speed data allotment, the more domestic data roaming you have access to each month. This means that if you reach your designated domestic data roaming allotment for the month, you have the option to upgrade to a larger full-speed data option either temporarily or permanently if you want more access off the T-Mobile network. See above to determine the domestic data roaming allotment for your data plan option.

Note: The megabyte allotment for your data plan can often be found by reviewing:

1. Your Plan page on my.T-Mobile.com

Check out the line that says “Data Service”.

2. Your Paper Bill

Find the “Plan:” box and check out the “Data” line; or

3. The Message You Receive When You Dial #WEB#

from your mobile phone.
You will receive a free usage alert via text message to notify you once you use 80% of your monthly domestic data roaming allotment. You will receive another free usage alert via text message to notify you when you reach 100% of your domestic data roaming allotment. These text messages will contain a link that will allow you to view your real-time usage. You can also view your domestic data usage by using the My Account feature on your device once you have exceeded 80% of your monthly full-speed data or domestic data roaming allotments.
Once your domestic data roaming allotment has been reached, your data services will be unavailable until you return to a T-Mobile coverage area, your bill cycle starts over, or you change your full-speed data allotment to an option that includes more domestic data roaming (temporarily or permanently). You can continue to use Wi-Fi connections for data access if you have a Wi-Fi-capable device. Most data services will be unavailable when you reach your domestic data roaming allotment. However, you can still access the My Account features on your device.
