Buttons and icons

There's a lot you can do with your new device, so here's a quick glance at some basic items to get you started.

  1. Display: Press firmly to change the watch face or see options in an app
  2. Digital crown: Press to see watch face or Home screen, turn to scroll, zoom, or adjust, press and hold for Siri
  3. Side button: Press to show the Doc, double click for Apple Pay, Press and hold to turn Apple Watch on or off
  4. Band release button: Releases the band so you can change it
  5. Speaker: Plays audio
  6. Heart rate sensor: Detects heart rate
  7. Air vent: Venting for cooling (Apple Watch Series 2 only)
  8. Microphone: Detects audio

First time use

When you first turn on your new device, you might see a setup wizard to help get you started. Take a look at the steps below to walk through the setup process.

  • You can pair one Apple Watch to your iPhone at a time.
  • To use your Apple Watch Series 3 or later with watchOS 8, you need to pair it with an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later.
  • To use your previous Apple Watches, you'll need to pair it with an iPhone 5s or later running the latest version of iOS.
  • Make sure you iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network and Bluetooth is turned on.
  • Family Set up requirements:
    • Two separate Apple IDs are required, an Apple ID for yourself and one for the family member.
    • Two factor authentication needs to be turned on for your Apple ID
    • You need to have the role of organizer or parent/guardian to set up an Apple Watch for a family member


Turn on Bluetooth and pair with a headset or other device

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Make sure your iPhone and Watch are next to each other, then tap Start pairing on the iPhone.
  3. You will be prompted to either set up the Watch for yourself or family member.
Setup for yourself
  1. Hold the Watch in front of the iPhone camera, centered in the square, until you see the message Your Apple Watch is Paired.
  2. On your iPhone, tap Set Up as New Apple Watch. If you’ve set up once before, you can tap Restore from Backup on your iPhone and follow onscreen steps.
  3. Choose your wrist preference, left or right.
  4. Read terms and conditions and tap Agree to continue.
  5. Sign in with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone.
  6. Enable / Disable Siri.
  7. Review the Workout Route Tracking and Shared Settings. If you change the settings of these services, those changes will apply to both of your devices.
  8. Select your screen font size.
  9. On your iPhone, choose whether to make a passcode for your Apple Watch. You'll need a Passcode for features like Apple Pay.
  10. If you tap Create a Passcode or Add a Long Passcode on your iPhone, you'll be asked to make a personal code using your Apple Watch and decide whether it will unlock with your iPhone.
  11. Keep your Apple Watch up to date by allowing automatic updates or installing them manually. 
  12. Tap Continue to set up Apple Pay, or tap  Set Up Later in the Apple Watch App.
  13. Review the Emergency SOS information, then tap Continue.
  14. If your device has an eSIM, tap to Set Up Cellular or Skip This Step. See On-device Activation (ODA) below for additional information.
  15. Select Continue at the Watch Faces prompt. 
  16. Tap Install All to sync iPhone apps that work with Apple Watch.
    • Only apps that are compatible with Apple Watch will sync.
    • Tap Choose Later to sync only basic information like Mail, Contacts, and Messages.
  17. Your iPhone and Apple Watch will begin to sync.
    • The length of this process varies depending on the amount of data you're syncing.
    • Keep your devices close together until you hear a chime and feel a gentle tapping sensation from your Apple Watch.
Create Family Setup
  1. Tap Setup for a Family Member, then tap Continue.
  2. On the Data and Privacy screen, tap Continue.
  3. On the How Family Setup Works screen, tap Continue.
  4. Have your family member put on the watch and align the watch with the camera viewfinder. 
  5. Your Apple Watch has been paired. You can set up your Apple Watch.
  6. Select Wrist preference, left or right.
  7. Tap Accept to the Terms and Conditions. 
  8. Adjust the screen size and text for the Watch, then tap Continue.
  9. Create a passcode for your Apple Watch.
  10. Choose or create an Apple ID.
    • If you have an ID already, you will be required to complete the two-factor authentication, if needed.
    • You must create a new Apple ID or use one that is not connected to the iPhone you are starting the pairing with. 
  11. Choose whether to share location with the Apple Watch. 
  12. You may be prompted to enter the password. 
  13. At the Cellular Setup screen, follow the prompts for the On-Device Activation screen. 
  14. Choose to share the Wi-Fi from your iPhone to the Apple Watch. 
  15. Enable /Disable Location Services.
  16. Choose whether or not if you would like to activate Siri. 
  17. Enable / Disable Watch analytics with Apple. 
  18. Tap whether to enable Messages in iCloud. 
  19. Tap whether to request Health Data from the shared Watch. 
  20. Tap to enable SOS, then tap Continue.
    • You may be prompted to add an emergency contact, or tap Continue.
    • You may be prompted to add a medical ID, or tap Continue.
    • Enable / Disable sharing medical ID. 
  21. Enable / Disable Activity Tracking. 
  22. Tap to enable/disable Workout tracking. 
  23. Select whether you would like to add photos to your Apple Watch. 
  24. Add or manage contacts for the Apple Watch, then tap Continue.
  25. Welcome to Apple Watch! Tap Ok to go to your home screen. 


Family Sharing

Family Sharing allows up to six family members, each one with their own Apple ID, share App Store, music, movie, TV, and book purchases, and an iCloud storage plan. It includes the ability to set up an Apple ID for kids and other family members for Family Setup.

On-device Activation (ODA)

  • After the first-time use process or when changing a SIM on the Apple Watch with cellular, you'll be prompted to go through on-device activation (ODA).
  • To manually start this process, on the iPhone open the Watch app and tap Cellular > Add a New Plan.
Change from one Watch with an eSIM to another
  1. Make sure you contact T-Mobile and provide your new Watch EID. If not, the Watch will try to add a new line on to your account.
  2. On the Activation screen, tap Continue. The Apple Watch will recognize that there is already existing data paired on a DIGITS or Standalone line.
  3. Select the number assigned to the previous device that you want to activate on the new Apple Watch, then tap Continue.


Purchased new from T-Mobile with AAL or setting up with a different iPhone

If your Watch was purchased through T-Mobile with AAL or you're setting it up with a different iPhone, it should already be activated with your T-Mobile service. Follow the steps below to complete activation:

  1. On the Activation screen, tap Continue to finish setting up DIGITS or Standalone on the Apple Watch.
  2. Wait while the Apple Watch finishes setup.
  3. Tap Continue to finish setting up your Watch.


Purchased anywhere other than T-Mobile and need to activate a line

If you purchased your device from somewhere other than T-Mobile, you'll be prompted to add a line for your Apple Watch.

  1. Make sure the device was purchased in the U.S. International models won't work in the U.S.
  2. If the device was originally used with another carrier, you must complete a master reset to release the EID.
  3. At the welcome screen, enter the last 4 digits of the primary account holder's SSN, then tap Continue.
  4. Select your data paired on a DIGITS or Standalone plan, then tap Continue.
  5. Review and agree to the Service Agreement, then tap Continue.
  6. Tap Continue to finish setting up your Watch.
