SEATTLE, September 16, 2020 – The 5G Open Innovation Lab (5G OI Lab), a global ecosystem of developers, enterprises, academia and government institutions, today announced the selection of its second cohort of early- and later-stage start-ups representing diverse markets and aimed at improving 5G network performance, reducing latency and enabling application innovation in both hardware and software platforms in the cloud and at the edge.

The Lab launched its inaugural program on May 4, 2020 with the strategic and financial support of founding partners Intel, NASA and T-Mobile.  Founding partners provide engineering, technology, mentorship and industry resources to founders and their companies to help them develop, test and bring to market new use cases that unleash the potential of 5G networks. The program has been adapted to a virtual format in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a study conducted by analyst firm IHS Markit, 5G is expected to generate $13.2 trillion of new market value by 2036 funded largely by enterprise IT spending. Said Jim Brisimitzis, general partner of the 5G Open Innovation Lab, “It’s clear that both enterprise and carrier networks are opening up new opportunities for innovation harnessing the connectivity of 5G with the proximity of edge computing. iUNU (<a href="https://iunu.com/">https://iunu.com/</a>), an emerging leader in precision agriculture leveraging AI to provide data analytics to farmers and greenhouse growers, is a graduate of the Lab and participated in the inaugural program this Spring. By adopting 5G technology standards, the company was able to build out several new features for their customer base. The Lab has selected 16 companies as members of the second cohort that will participate in the 12-week program. The Lab does not take an equity position in the start-up companies, rather, companies collaborate with 5G technology experts and business advisors through CEO and CTO roundtables, private working sessions, virtual networking and social events, and opportunities to meet with the Lab’s extensive partner network of venture capital firms. The 5G Open Innovation Lab is also a founding member of Washington’s newest Innovation Partnership Zone (IPZ), a statewide initiative, sponsored by the City of Bellevue and administered by the Washington State Department of Commerce.  The IPZ is designed to stimulate regional economic growth by providing access to intellectual capital, and to accelerate the development of new technologies, marketable products, company formation, and job creation. Overland Park, Kan. — September 14, 2020 — How can 5G transform the future of nursing? That’s the challenge T-Mobile and students at the University of Kansas are taking on this fall semester. T-Mobile, KU School of Nursing (SON) and the KU Center for Design Research (CDR) have teamed up through a Capstone Research Project to help students develop new training methods and tools that could revolutionize how nursing is taught at the University of Kansas School of Nursing and beyond.

CDR students working with technical experts at T-Mobile are researching potential solutions that combine the use of 5G technologies, distance learning principles, and design thinking. They’ll explore new ways to use virtual and augmented reality as a teaching tool, and advance understanding of the role artificial intelligence can play in a clinical environment. This multi-year program aims to find new and creative ways to educate and train nurses across a variety of settings – whether they are attending a university, conducting research in a lab or working in a rural clinic or large metropolitan hospital.

“With the onset of COVID-19 we quickly moved to a virtual nursing education program and now more than ever see the need for creative new approaches using advanced technology to educate nursing students at all levels,” said Cynthia Teel, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, KU School of Nursing. “We’re incredibly excited about the future of our educational programs and we also see a tremendous opportunity to advance how nursing is taught in this country.”

“The worldwide pandemic has touched everyone from the most advanced urban centers to isolated rural villages. But with adversity comes opportunity,” said Gregory Thomas, Professor/Director, Center for Design Research. “Our nursing education has to be expanded. Students must learn their profession with ease and with tools that don’t currently exist. They must utilize the knowledge learned from having to improvise. Its means of delivery is essential - it must be quick, reliable and easy to implement. The School of Nursing has the need, T-Mobile has the 5G technology, and KU CDR will work collectively in the collaboration to bring about a paradigm shift in nursing education.”

At the end of the Fall semester, CDR students will present their 5G research in the form of learnings for new product and service ideas, potential business models and go-to-market strategies.

What’s the news: It's official — T-Mobile's 5G network is live in Lisbon, North Dakota. Why it matters: 5G has been all the talk in wireless and now it’s a reality in Lisbon. LISBON, North Dakota— August 4, 2020 — Look! Up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane … it's 5G? With nearly 300 drones and magenta-inspired visual flair, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced the company is delivering its nationwide 5G signal to Lisbon. Residents and businesses in the area with 5G-capable smartphones on T-Mobile's network can now get faster data speeds than before, especially indoors.

"There is so much potential in the next-generation of wireless technology, and 5G will create opportunities for innovation and economic benefit not only in our community, but across the state. 5G is another great reason Lisbon is 'a place to call home.'"

To celebrate the arrival of 5G locally, on Sunday evening, T-Mobile lit the night sky in west Lisbon using nearly 300 drones with brilliant LED lights to skillfully craft brief messages to local residents announcing the availability of its 5G network in the area. The light show, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, could be seen by residents in attendance at Sheyenne Speedway as well as within the entirety of the Lisbon city limits. T-Mobile plans to use footage captured from the drone light show in a national campaign it launches today, highlighting the Un-carrier's expansion of 5G into even more rural communities nationwide.

The very heart of wireless service is based on spectrum — invisible highways in the air that transport voice and data from a phone to a cell site. This nationwide 5G rollout from T-Mobile, and the network in Lisbon, is based on the operator's 600 MHz spectrum, also referred to as low-band. It provides the foundational layer for T-Mobile’s 5G network. Download speeds on T-Mobile’s 5G on 600 MHz will be around 1.5 times faster than LTE on average and that experience will improve exponentially over time, just like with 4G.

In the coming months and years, T-Mobile will build upon this foundational nationwide 5G layer with mid-band spectrum acquired as part of the Sprint merger earlier this year, and high-band spectrum that will add capacity — or more “lanes” using the invisible highway analogy — for greater speeds and better coverage. This combination of spectrum assets will deliver a 5G network with both breadth and depth, something Verizon and AT&T simply cannot do as quickly. The stakes are high for the U.S. as billions in economic growth and jobs are expected to come from 5G and the innovations it will unleash.

Standalone 5G allows the Un-carrier to massively expand its 5G footprint, bringing next-gen connectivity to more places while paving the way for future groundbreaking applications

BELLEVUE, Wash. — August 4, 2020 — This is some next level 5G. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced today it is the FIRST IN THE WORLD to launch a commercial nationwide standalone architecture (SA) 5G network. The move immediately expands the Un-carrier’s 5G footprint — already the nation’s largest — to nearly 2,000 additional cities and towns, brings 5G deeper into buildings and sets the stage for future groundbreaking applications. In other words, SA 5G is the future, and T-Mobile is leading the charge to bring it to life.

To celebrate the milestone and the arrival of 5G for the first time in hundreds of small towns across America, T-Mobile used drones to light up the sky over Lisbon, ND, letting people in the small town know “5G is here”. Taking 5G Next-Level The first phase of 5G has focused on delivering new 5G radio capabilities while leveraging existing LTE core networks and has been key in accelerating 5G deployment. Now T-Mobile’s new 5G core is coming to life, which in the future can unlock blazing fast speeds in more places, real-time responses and massive connectivity. SA, especially when coupled with core network slicing in the future, will lead to an environment where transformative applications are made possible — things like connected self-driving vehicles, supercharged IoT, real-time translation … and things we haven’t even dreamed of yet. In SA areas, T-Mobile engineers have already seen up to a 40% improvement in latency during testing, and that is just the beginning of what can be done with Standalone 5G.
