Whether it’s sports, business, or life in general, nobody likes to be at the back of the pack, right?

Hah! Trick question. The correct answer is: WRONG!

Sometimes, starting at the back of the pack is the best way to win the race. That’s partly because seeing your competition out ahead is a powerful motivator. It’s also a great opportunity to watch the competition run the race, observe their strengths and weaknesses, and figure out the best strategy to beat them to the finish line.

This is the fundamental Un-carrier story. In 2013, when T-Mobile was still the smallest major U.S. wireless provider, we looked at the big bad Carriers and saw that they were coasting on the strength of a lazy and broken customer service model that everybody hated. So, we changed the rules of the race. Through a series of bold Un-carrier moves, we got rid of data overages and surprise fees, went unlimited, and ditched indifferent service. In the process, we made wireless communications simple, uncomplicated — and fun.

The results speak for themselves. Our customer-first approach has made T-Mobile America’s fastest-growing consumer wireless company. We’ve passed AT&T in the race for first in consumer wireless and we’re closing in on Verizon.

Now there’s another race underway—the race for first in the enterprise wireless market.

Guess who’s lurking at the back of the pack?

Today, our market share is less than 10 percent.

Why? Because when I look at enterprise communications, I see a world transformed by the pandemic and advanced technologies like 5G that have given us a decade’s worth of progress in a single year’s time. It’s a world where 9 out of 10 U.S. enterprises expect employees to work remotely at least three days a week in the future and people want to work from virtually anywhere using the mobile devices they love best.

I love that number because in the race for enterprise customers, I see how the two old Carriers are using their 90 percent market share to shackle business and governments to technologies and plans that cost a lot and deliver very little. In the year before the pandemic, enterprises spent $6 billion on communications technology from another era, like desk phones and PBX equipment. Over the next 5 years, they’ll spend $2.5 billion on overages. And while the Carriers make big promises about the 5G future, they’ve locked their enterprise customers into data plans that limit access to 5G, if they can access it at all.

And I love that number because when I look at T-Mobile, I see a company that is bringing the same Un-carrier approach to business that turned the consumer wireless world upside down.

Flexibility, collaboration and productivity have always been key to running an effective business – and are especially critical during a global pandemic. Now, thanks to more efficient data networks, 5G technology and a work-from-anywhere (WFX) philosophy, we’re entering a new world of workforce mobility.

I’ve worked in the telecommunications industry for more than 20 years and have seen firsthand the innovation that emerges with each evolution of wireless networks. With 4G LTE, mobile applications became the foundation for consumer-facing services like ridesharing and mobile video streaming. With 5G, we can expect new types of business models that revolutionize the way people work.

A recent Gartner <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2020-07-14-gartner-survey-reveals-82-percent-of-company-leaders-plan-to-allow-employees-to-work-remotely-some-of-the-time" target="_blank">survey</a> revealed that 82% of company leaders in the United States plan to accommodate remote work environments for employees at least some of the time, with nearly half saying the shift will be permanent. And why not? A mobile workforce is generally <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/26/who-is-happiest-working-from-home-heres-what-latest-jobs-data-says.html" target="_blank">happier</a> and more productive. A Boston Consulting Group <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2020/valuable-productivity-gains-covid-19" target="_blank">study</a> found that 75% of remote workers report improved productivity on individual tasks, with 51% saying the same for collaboration.

So, what is the difference between work from home and work from anywhere? Both forgo reporting to a traditional office and working from anywhere has become the agile new norm for many. Whether on the road, in the field or on the front lines, 5G – including 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) – empowers employees and businesses to thrive while helping to improve performance and reliability.

Redefining the world of work 5G home office internet is the best option for mobile workers because it prioritizes safety, security and convenience. As a dedicated, high-speed connection for a mobile workforce, people working from home don’t have to compete with family members – like my four children – who are streaming movies, playing video games or doing other activities that suck up bandwidth. It also guarantees an increased level of security – thanks to corporate policies and enterprise-level identity management tools – that are applied to corporate data and systems. And the ability to remove distractions like social media, entertainment sites or competing applications helps employees stay focused.

As an added bonus, organizations no longer need to sacrifice speed for privacy. Employees can bypass open consumer-level networks that are susceptible to congestion and security threats. Tasks that previously could only be performed on-premises can now be completed anywhere, just as fast and secure as if standing inside a data center.

Decentralization of data The decentralization of data is another important component of 5G and the WFX story. Data can now move to where it makes the most sense, whether in the cloud or closer to the network edge, depending on the need or use case. 5G creates an open road for data to flow by bringing data closer to the work and the worker. By 2025, Gartner predicts approximately 75% of all enterprise data will <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gartner.com/smarterwithgartner/what-edge-computing-means-for-infrastructure-and-operations-leaders/" target="_blank">shift</a> to edge networks, resulting in even lower latency and faster speeds. This transformation, of course, depends on integrated ecosystems powered by emerging technologies like 5G and delivered via FWA.

Certain artificial intelligence capabilities, for example, may function even better in a backpack than in a data center. 5G allows the new mobile workforce to be better equipped and more productive when and where employees need it. Thousands of enterprise workers can share larger amounts of data faster than ever with 5G. Faster processing enables workers to use more devices and applications, such as A.I. and the Internet of Things. Combined with the cost, security and accessibility benefits of FWA, 5G is now a transformational technology.

Bridging the rural digital divide With the growing availability of 5G home office internet comes the democratization of connectivity. T-Mobile, for instance, is extending its ability to underserved rural areas that currently lack the infrastructure or choice.

T-Mobile and WGU are providing up to 2,000 WGU students with a free hotspot and wireless connectivity on T-Mobile’s nationwide network through WGU’s Online Access Scholarship, available across the country. COVID-19 shined a light on the digital divide in higher education like never before, and through WGU’s initiative, the university is tackling this challenge to create more equitable access to online higher education opportunities.

A recent Ed Trust-West <a href="https://west.edtrust.org/resource/the-digital-divide-in-higher-ed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> found that in California alone, 102,000 college students from lower income households (14%) and 145,000 college students of color (13%) may lack internet access. Also, 109,000 students from lower income households (15%) and 134,000 students of color (12%) may lack access to a device to engage in distance learning. The disparities are more pronounced with rural and urban populations than in suburban areas, where reliable broadband access is more publicly available.

“If there is one way to dramatically democratize access to education, and thus, access to opportunity—it is to ensure that every household in America has access to highspeed internet,” said WGU President Scott Pulsipher. “WGU and T-Mobile share the same vision—to close the digital divide. Company Announces Director Lawrence Guffey to Conclude His Term at Annual Meeting; Also Announces Departure of Board Member Stephen Kappes

BELLEVUE, Wash. — April 12, 2021 — T-Mobile US, Inc. (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced that finance executive Bavan M. Holloway has been nominated to join its board of directors. If elected by stockholders, Holloway is expected to join the board and its Audit Committee after T- Mobile’s annual stockholders meeting on June 3, 2021. The company’s other 12 board members will also stand for re-election at that annual meeting.

Holloway has over 30 years of broad finance and audit experience in complex and highly regulated business environments. Holloway previously was Vice President of Corporate Audit for Boeing, among other senior finance roles. She was also previously a Partner at KPMG. Holloway holds a bachelor’s degree in Administration from the University of Tulsa and a master’s degree in Financial Markets and Trading from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She currently serves on the board for TPI Composites Inc. and the YWCA Seattle/King/Snohomish and previously served on the board of the Special Olympics of Washington. 

T-Mobile also shared that board member Lawrence H. Guffey will not seek re-election at the annual meeting of stockholders and that board member Stephen Kappes resigned from the board effective April 6th.

(NASDAQ: TMUS) unveiled ambitious plans to unlock future growth and capture even more momentum over the next five years. Since closing its historic merger with Sprint in April 2020, the Supercharged Un-carrier has delivered industry best total net additions, strong profitability and higher than expected synergies, putting the company on the path to deliver financial results that exceed both the original three to four-year and longer-term targets provided in the original merger plans. Through a line-up of some of the company’s senior executives today, the Un-carrier outlined plans to use its combination of superior assets and scale from the merger and the recent C-Band auction, to continue leading the industry in growth by delivering more value AND the best 5G network combined with the best experiences to consumers and businesses across the country.  “Only T-Mobile has the superior assets, scale, financial position and customer-loving team to lead this new 5G era now into the next decade, if not beyond. We are taking that lead and setting our sights higher -- taking on new growth ambitions and expanding into new markets like never before.
