Slow WiFi On 5G Gateway But Not On A Connected Router WiFi
We use the new 5G home internet gateway (the black box with the small screen on side) and the WiFi on the gateway is slower only for my computer. Does anyone know what could cause this weird issue? here are the details:
- The speed increases when I switch the WiFi to an older router compared to gateway, 230 Mbps vs 16 Mbps. The old router is connected to the T-Mobile 5g gateway.
- Speed increases to 200+ Mbps with a wired connection.
- Does not seems to affect the other devices on the google internet speed test.
- Computer has a 802.11ac network adapter which is fine.
- The WiFi frequency is on automatic.
- This was never an issue with the old silver trash can (it was adorable and functional).
I have called T-Mobile support to asks what the issue could be but the person didn’t understand and repeatedly told me to power cycle to gateway (which didn’t work).
You can have up to 5 SSIDs on the gateway. I would make one just for the computer and experiment with the configuration. You can use either 2.4 GHz or 5 GH; and either WPA2/WPA3 or WPA2 or WPA/WPA2 security.

With regard to WiFi, devices connected to 2.4 GHz bands will be quite a bit slower than devices connected to the 5 GHz band (assuming adequate signal strength). If you have a single SSID for both channels (the default) devices can switch back and forth between channels without you knowing it. A device that was fast on 5 GHz can suddenly appear slow if it jumps to the 2,4 GHz channel.
Also, with my Arcadayn KVD21 router at least, if there are a lot of devices connected to 2,4 GHz channels, the speed of those devices all suffer. I am not sure what the device count limit is, but it isn’t that high.
