T-Mobile will not let me return phone
That is a really long time to try and get the one phone number shared onto the new phone. It sounds like you were on the right path, but there was a missing link somewhere. Digits is the right way to connect one phone number to many phones or many numbers to one phone and the process is a little different depending on the outcome you want.
To have one number on two phones you shouldn’t have to exclusively use the Digits app on the second phone. The way it should work is you have your T-Mobile account with your main phone number and then a Digits number. The digits number is unique but just a place holder, it should be on the Data with Paired DIGITS plan, and the sim number should be the one for your second phone. Once that foundation is in place, you can use the DIGITS portal to copy your main phone number onto that placeholder line. Those steps are on Get started with DIGITS | T-Mobile Support under Set up Data with paired DIGITS. After is it paired, your second phone would use the main phone number on the regular call and text apps, so you should not have to rely on the digits app.
I’ve had this set up a couple of different times in the past, so I know it is possible. I am not sure why it has been so tough to set up this time around. If you are willing to try one more time, you might reach out to our T-Force team by sending a message on one of the social media platforms linked below. I always have the best luck with that team, and I am sure they could get it set up for you pretty quickly.
