If you have Windows 10 clients it is not hard to do. After the hostname change you do have to reboot the system for it to take place. By default the Windows client hostname can be a bit odd.
Rename your Windows 10 PC
- Select Start > Settings > System > About.
- Select Rename this PC.
- Enter a new name and select Next. You may be asked to sign in.
- Select Restart now or Restart later.
Change your Apple computer's local hostname
- On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. ...
- Click Edit in the “Local hostname” section at the bottom of the window, then enter a new local hostname.
- If needed, turn on the “Use dynamic global hostname” option.

That’s really disappointing, this is very difficult for the average user.

No as it only records the information it receives and does not provide a way to create an alias for that info it receives from the clients. You can change the host names on the clients and then see what you have in the devices information on the application.
