Sprint 5G Overview

May 11, 2019

With one of its largest investments in years, Sprint is building a blazing-fast, high-capacity mobile network that will enable the next wave of wireless innovation. Sprint mobile 5G is going to create incredible new connections to people and things, services and opportunities that will allow our customers to live a better life.

Where available, mobile users will have the potential for fiber-like download speeds in the palm of their hand to go and be connected to everything – people, machines, devices and more. Our lives – at home, at work, at play – will get faster.

Sprint plans to begin its mobile 5G rollout in the first half of 2019. Its first nine 5G markets include areas within some of the largest cities in the country:

  • Atlanta
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Kansas City
  • Los Angeles
  • New York City
  • Phoenix
  • Washington, D.C.

At launch, Sprint’s on-the-go customers can expect mobile 5G coverage ranging from nearly 30 square miles covering Midtown and lower Manhattan, to approximately 230 square miles spanning the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area, for a total initial 5G coverage footprint of more than 1,000 square miles across all nine cities.

Sprint 5G is currently on-air in downtown Chicago where the company is testing and optimizing its deployment of standards-based 5G software and hardware using Massive MIMO radios from Samsung. Initial drive tests from February 2019 show Sprint 5G is providing connectivity in the downtown area, from the Magnificent Mile and the Loop to University of Illinois at Chicago.

Massive MIMO Technology

Innovative Massive MIMO technology and Sprint’s -fast 2.5 GHz spectrum are the foundation of Sprint’s award-winning approach to 5G. Sprint is deploying 64T64R (64 transmit, 64 receive) Massive MIMO radios using 128 antennas, working with technology leaders Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung Electronics America Inc.

Massive MIMO is capable of delivering up to 10 times the capacity of current LTE systems, significantly increasing data speeds for more customers in high-traffic locations. Sprint’s Massive MIMO radios support split-mode, enabling Sprint to offer 4G LTE and 5G simultaneously on the same radio. Massive MIMO radios Sprint has been deploying on its sites only require a software upgrade to serve 5G as we light up markets starting in 2019, a cost-efficient strategy.

5G Devices

Sprint is working with the right companies in order to deliver breakthrough technology and a robust roadmap for its consumer and business customers to experience Sprint 5G. The first two devices, from LG and HTC, will be available in the first half of 2019. They are powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ mobile platform using the Snapdragon X50 5G modem with Gigabit LTE and 5G capabilities and kick data speeds into turbo drive.

  • LG V50 ThinQ 5G, Sprint’s first 5G smartphone, boasts a new way to interact with the world using touchless control that lets users perform common tasks hands-free with just a wave. The large OLED screen, which doubles as a speaker, provides an immersive entertainment experience.
  • HTC 5G Hub is a first-of-its-kind dedicated 5G mobile smart hub enabling smooth 4K video streaming to a second 4K capable screen and mobile gaming serving up to 20 users as a 5G mobile hotspot. A 5-inch HD touchscreen allows for ease of use and high-quality visuals, and long-lasting power makes for a travel companion that harnesses 5G speeds.

In summer 2019, Sprint customers can also experience 5G on the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. Sprint will announce additional devices as it builds its 5G product ecosystem to give customers choice in how they connect to Sprint’s 5G network.

5G Relationships

Sprint and Google announced they are expanding their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) relationship to include 5G. Following Sprint’s 5G launch, Google Fi customers with Sprint 5G compatible phones in a Sprint 5G coverage area will be automatically connected to the next-generation wireless network.

In addition, Sprint and gaming pioneer Hatch announced a collaboration that will provide a first-of-its kind mobile cloud gaming experience when Sprint launches 5G in select cities this spring. The faster speeds and great reliability will enable gamers to access a huge library of games and play instantly without waiting to download or update games.

Sprint 5G Experience

This year, Sprint opened its 5G Experience, a 1,100 square foot immersive center featuring more than a dozen stations and demonstrations that use augmented reality, virtual reality and simulated displays. It takes visitors through the foundation for 5G from spectrum to a fiber-optics network and from Massive MIMO technology to real-world demonstrations of 5G’s lower latency. Guests learn how 5G will help innovate gaming and entertainment, power smart cities and make cities safer, and connect billions of things through IoT.
