Recently, I traded in an iPhone 14 for a new iPhone 16 Pro Max. Tmobile gave me $500 for the old phone, applied as a $20.84 credit for 24 months. I need to add my work phone number to the new phone but I can't because the phone is 'networked' locked until it is paid in full. If I pay the outstanding balance on the new phone to unlock it, I will lose the $20.84/mo credit....which means, like you, I basically sent them my old iPhone 14 for free. This is definitely a fraudulent and very misleading business practice.
