You might want to reach out to Customer Care at 611 or send a DM to T-Mobile on Facebook or Twitter to ensure that Shortcodes are enabled for your line. T-Mobile's shortcode messages are received regardless of whether they are enabled or not.
Not sure of the source. Companies like Amazon and one from today, an insurance company, will not come through, but others do. Like TMobile.
