Great Cellphone though voice quality unreliable

I purchased the TCL Flip 4 5G (model T440W) online from T-Mobile online on the day it became available (Thurs, 2025/06/05) and received it two days later. This is a new model phone from TCL and it uses a new version of Kai OS (4.0), so I assume there will be "issues" that come up through real world use. I've been using and prefer flip phones since 1998. If I need more extensive Internet, other functionality, etc., I use the hot spot mode from the flip phone with an 8" (Wi-Fi) tablet. First impressions, even though stated to be slightly lighter than my previous TCL Flip 2 (model 4058G), it feels (& is) heavier and it has a larger (3.2" vs. 2.8") main screen. The 3000 mAh *non-removable* battery, my guess, is probably a big reason why it's heavier. (The combined nano SIM and (1 TB max) micro SD slot are on the side, as a result, more like a small tablet or smartphone.) Probably the most important aspect of this new cellphone is that it's "core" is the "octacore" Qualcomm Snapdragon 4s (SM4635) processor. It is the same smartphone chip used in lower end smartphones (in the $350 to $600 range). Not all of the processor's capabilities are being used by the TCL Flip 4 5G. For example, the chip can support much higher resolution and more complex cameras (than the included 5 MP). But most importantly for this TCL flip phone, the performance is much better than any previous phone (AFAIK). The TCL Flip 2 is AOSP so this is my first Kai OS phone. No, not that impressed so far with the Kai OS ecosystem (as many flip phone users comment elsewhere), though there are some decent features. I assume it's early days for Kai OS 4.0 support in the Kai OS store. For example, the eBook reader is useless. All pages have the right 10% or so cut off, so sentences, poems, etc., make no sense. The RSS apps are nice (e.g., for news feeds, podcasts, etc.) --as far as they go, but have very limited config/settings options -- a common refrain for the KaiOS ecosystem it would appear. I use e-mail acc'ts to receive notification from my home computer system UPS and home security system. Though the notification "polling" intervals aren't that frequent & notifications are non-existent (outside of the e-mail app), they're good enough for my purposes--though I do wish they were more configurable (a common refrain with this phone/Kai OS). (I also wish e-mail was on the shortcuts panel (or more easily located, e.g., on the home screen), but the addition of a quick link to the hotspot feature is very nice.) It would be nice to have 9 instead of the existing 6 shortcuts, with one or more user selectable. I did have initial problems setting up sending e-mail and text with photos; the problem was quickly solved by T-Mobile: the solution required a fix from T-Mobile tech support, who handled it nicely and quickly (I kept getting an erroneous "number blocked" message for multiple recipients). The TCL Flip 4 supports two SIMs (one nano SIM & one eSIM) but I'm only using/configured with the T-Mobile nano SIM. Even though I have geolocation turned off, I see the "location" icon displayed periodically at the top of the screen. It appears either one or more apps or T-Mobile is "harvesting" the phone's location. Is that right? What's THAT about? The keypad defaults to "predictive" (unlike the Flip 2), which I "love" as much as I do "autocomplete" -- both are wrong much more often than they are right (marketing "buzzwords" along with "intuitive interfaces" that annoy more than help). Thus, it takes an extra step to get out of predictive mode to create and send text messages. I prefer the form factor of flip phones (vs. the smartphone slabs) and the size of the TCL Flip 4 5G is at the upper end of my personal size/weight limits. (The TCL Flip 4 5G still fits in the watch pocket of my jeans!) So far, the 1st week of my use of this phone has been good (other than the initial text messaging and e-mail glitch (that were quickly solved by T-Mobile. Thanks!)). Voice call quality is sub-par (i.e., some call recipients can't understand me, noisy line, etc.; maybe because of VoIP and cellphone manufacturer issues; e.g., some manufacturers not supporting open standards?). As with my Flip 2, I have to use the speaker mode for many voice calls (which is not do-able in all situations of course). In general, I wish TCL and/or other manufacturers made better quality flip phones. The apparent $100 ceiling results in poor component, build quality, Q/A, etc., IMHO. I would think a good quality flip phone at the $200-$300 price level would sell. I would line up for one! (*IF* of course, it were well made and had "value," etc.). All in all, the first week of use went well, and I plan to keep evaluating the phone as I go through trying out its capabilities with various tasks in various locations. For example, 5G is not available everywhere and getting any signal on the southwest side of Pt Loma/Cabrillo Monument in San Diego was extremely difficult. Luckily, T-Mobile's plans include Canada and Mexico, and my phone connected with Mexico to complete a call! Even though I only give it 3 stars (poor voice quality; poor apps, e.g., eBook reader), my first impression is that the TCL Flip 4 5G is the best flip phone I've owned so far. (Note: I only give 5-stars to consumer-electronics products when the product performs extremely well longer than their mult-year warranty periods.)

Yes, I recommend this product.
