What is Wi-Fi security? 

Wi-Fi security refers to the measures and technologies you can use to protect your home wireless network from unauthorized access. It helps ensure that only the devices you approve can connect to your network and that your data - like passwords, personal files, or financial info - remains private as it travels over the air. 

Without the right Wi-Fi security, your network can be an open invitation to cybercriminals who can do things like hijack your bandwidth (slow your connection), steal personal data, or even inject malware into your devices. That’s why setting up strong Wi-Fi protection is just as important as locking your front door.

  1. Change your network name and password: When you first get a router or gateway, it comes with a default network name (SSID) and password. Change both, so it's harder for others to guess. For example:

  2. Create strong passwords: Like in the example above, use long, hard-to-guess passwords. Don’t include personal info like birthdays. A password manager can help you keep track of them. 
  1. Protect your SSID: Just as with your password, it’s better to give your SSID a unique name that doesn’t reveal personal info (like your name, address, or ISP). This keeps things cleaner and safer. 
  2. Turn off WPS and UPnP: These settings on your router make it easier to connect devices, but they can also make it easier for hackers to get in. It's best to turn them off unless you really need them. 
  3. Turn on your router’s firewall: Most routers have a built-in firewall that helps block unwanted connections. Make sure it’s turned on in your router settings.

  1. Don’t leave Wi-Fi passwords in plain sight 

It’s tempting to write down your Wi-Fi password and stick it to the fridge, but that leaves your network wide open to anyone in your home - even service workers or visitors. 

Instead, use secure device-to-device sharing available on iPhones and Android phones. Just bring two Bluetooth-enabled devices close together, and they can share credentials without revealing the actual password. Only share access with trusted guests or family members. 

  1. Set up a guest network 

Even people you trust - like family and friends - can unknowingly bring malware into your network through compromised devices. That’s why it’s smart to set up a guest network for visitors. A guest network is isolated from your main network, meaning it can’t access files or devices like your laptop or smart TV. Give it a separate name and password from your main network. 

Be sure to connect smart home gadgets (like cameras, lights, or thermostats) to your guest network, too. These Internet of Things (IoT) devices are often more vulnerable to hacking.

  1. Monitor network activity
