Why you should switch ISPs
While switching internet providers can feel like a big move, in many cases, it’s worth taking that leap. Let’s take a closer look at the potential benefits:
- Better deals. If you’ve been with your current ISP for a while, chances are you're no longer on a promotional plan. That can mean you’re paying more than necessary for internet service that may not even meet your needs. Switching providers allows you to take advantage of introductory offers, credits for switching, or just lower overall prices.
- The coverage and speed you need. Technology advances fast, and so do ISPs. If you’ve been struggling with laggy video calls, streaming issues, or spotty connectivity in parts of your home, a switch may bring faster speeds or more reliable coverage.
- Bundling. Looking to streamline those monthly bills? Switching providers gives you more chances to bundle your internet with another one of your bills, like your phone, for example. Many providers now offer customizable internet packages that can lower your monthly costs when combined with other services they offer.
- Moving = opportunity. Relocating is the perfect time for an ISP switch. You’re already disconnecting and reconnecting services, so why not change your internet plan at the same time? It’s a clean break from old contracts and potentially outdated equipment, giving you a fresh start overall.
How to change internet providers
If you’re thinking about making the move—but are asking yourself, "Do I need to cancel internet before switching?" or "How do I transfer ISP without downtime?" Before we get into the details, here are the first two steps to take before making any decisions.
Step 1: Compare internet providers and packages
Start by researching your options. Check out online reviews and use internet comparison tools to weigh speed, reliability, price, service, and more. Consider:
- Contract vs. no-contract options
- Speeds and data caps
- Bundled services
- Equipment or installation fees
- Wired vs. wireless options
- 5G network coverage
Step 2: Check availability at your address
Before you fall in love with a provider, make sure service is available at your new or current location. Availability can vary, especially in rural or newly developed areas.
Ready for a change? Here’s how to switch to T-Mobile Home Internet
If you’re looking to upgrade your internet experience, T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is a strong alternative—offering fast, wireless connectivity with a simple setup, multiple plans to choose from, bundling options, and no annual contracts or equipment fees. Here’s exactly how to make the switch.
1. Check T-Mobile Home Internet availability
Before anything else, head to T-Mobile’s website to see if service is available at your address. Availability is expanding quickly thanks to T-Mobile’s growing 5G network. In fact, T-Mobile is leading the way in 5G deployment, with more than 60-million households eligible for T-Mobile 5G Home Internet. Plus, a third of our Home Internet customers are in rural America.
2. Cancel your current ISP
If you’re ready to make a change and are wondering, "Do I need to cancel my internet before switching?"—the answer is yes, in most cases (see our Test Drive info below). Contact your current provider to:
- Request cancellation
- Confirm your contract end date
- Schedule return of any rented equipment
Tip: If you're under contract, ask about early termination fees. (T-Mobile does not have early termination fees.)
3. Find a plan and sign up for T-Mobile Home Internet
Once you've confirmed availability, select the plan that works for you. Here are a few popular options:
- Rely Home Internet – reliable, affordable option with fast speeds
- Amplified Home Internet – our fastest speeds and Advanced Cyber Security
- All-In Home Internet – our fastest speeds in more places, Wi-Fi Mesh Access Point, Advanced Cyber Security & more
Signing up is quick online or in-store—no installation appointment required.
4. Receive and set up your equipment
T-Mobile will ship your gateway (a combo modem/router device) after you sign up. Best of all, the setup is simple and takes just a few minutes. Here’s what to do after getting your gateway in the mail:
- Download the T-Life app from the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
- Unbox your gateway. Plug the included power cable into the gateway’s port, then plug in the other end into an outlet in a central area of your home.
- Once the indicator light comes on, open the T-Life app and create an account (or log in if you happen to already have a T-Mobile account).
- Click the "Let’s Go" button at the bottom of the screen.
- The T-Life app will check your signal and walk you through finding the perfect spot for your gateway.
- Now you’re connected! No technician visit needed.
TIP: Once connected, the app will suggest changing your Wi-Fi password. It’s a good idea to change it from the one included on the gateway label to something safer and easier to remember.
5. Connect your devices
On your phone, laptop, or any smart device:
- Open Wi-Fi settings
- Select your new network
- Enter the password
- That’s it! Your devices are online.
More benefits to switching to T-Mobile
Switching ISPs involves more than just the signal—it’s also about cost, contracts, and control. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- End-of-contract fees covered: As mentioned earlier, some providers charge early termination fees that can cost hundreds of dollars when you cancel your service. However, T-Mobile does not have early termination fees.
- No extra equipment purchases, no annual contracts: With T-Mobile, there’s no need to buy or rent a modem or router. Your all-in-one gateway comes included with your plan, making set-up smooth, cost-effective, and free of messy wires. Plus, you pay month-to-month with no iron-clad annual contracts.
- Manage everything in the app: The same T-Life app that helped you set up your gateway also helps you manage your service, monitor usage, troubleshoot, and more, right on the app.
- 15-day Test Drive: If you're not quite ready to cut-the-cord with your current ISP, you can keep your current service while you take a 15-day Test Drive with T-Mobile to see if it’s right for you.
T-Mobile is the fastest-growing Home Internet provider. Bundle Home Internet with a phone plan on America’s largest 5G network and get both at a great price. It’s never been easier to upgrade your internet plan and start fresh.
T-Mobile Home Internet is delivered via cellular network; speeds vary due to factors affecting cellular networks.
