To check the current software version, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Read the version on the phone, and check it below:

Your phone has non-T-Mobile software, and it is unsupported. The manufacturer and T-Mobile cannot update your software.

Requirements to update

To be able to update to the current software version, the below requirements must be met:

Software Version

  • Apple iPhone 5s / 5c / 5 / 4S / 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus and iPad Air / mini / mini 2 / mini 3 / mini 4
  • Device software is not jailbroken
  • 50% battery life or connected to a power source
  • Wi-Fi Data connection or a computer with iTunes and internet access
  • Less than 1 GB available memory (File size of update is ~40 MB)

  • Apple iPhone 5s / 5c / 5 / 4S / 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus and iPad Air / mini / mini 2 / mini 3 / mini 4
  • Latest iOS 9 software version
  • Device software is not jailbroken
  • 50% battery life or connected to a power source
  • Data connection or a computer with iTunes and internet access
  • Minimum of 1 MB available memory (File size of update is ~10 KB).

Update automatically Over-The-Air (OTA)

Important: It is highly recommended you complete a backup (via iCloud or iTunes) prior to updating device software. This is a safety measure that will ensure you do not lose any contacts, messages, pictures, or other important device data.

This software update will be pushed to your phone beginning August 25. Your phone will notify you when it is ready to update. If your phone has not received an OTA message, see Software update: Download below.

After receiving the OTA notification, follow these steps:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the notifications.
  2. Tap the software update notification.
  3. Tap Download.
    Note: You must be connected to Wi-Fi to complete this step.
  4. After the download has completed, tap Install to update.
