Learn how to identify software versions for Apple iOS 15 as well as details on recent software updates. 

 

Check software version

  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > General > About.
  2. Review the Software Version and Carrier fields.

Enable automatic updates

  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Tap Automatic Updates, then turn on Download iOS Updates.
  3. Turn on Install iOS Updates. Your device will automatically update to the latest version of iOS. Some updates might need to be installed manually.

Requirements for download

Your device must meet the following requirements to update your software to the most current version:

  • Apple iPhone 6s / 6s Plus / 7 / 7 Plus / SE (1st & 2nd gen) / 8 / 8 Plus / X / XS / XS Max / XR / 11 / 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max / 12 / 12 mini / 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max / 13 / 13 mini / 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max
  • Device software is not jailbroken
  • 50% or higher battery life
  • Wi-Fi data connection or a computer with iTunes and internet access
  • File size: ~600 MB

 

Update your device software

Update over the air (OTA)

  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. After the device searches for available software updates, it will display the current version.
  3. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi.
  4. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
  5. After the download has completed, tap Install Now to update.

Update Carrier Settings

  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > General > About.
  2. After the device searches for available software updates, it will display the current version.
  3. If a 'Carrier Settings Update' is available, you will receive a pop-up notification.
  4. Tap Update.

Update from a computer

  1. Connect iPhone to the computer using the included USB cable.
  2. After iTunes opens, select your device when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  3. Click General Check for Update.
  4. If an update is available, click Download and Update. Continue by following the onscreen instructions.
  5. Do not disconnect your device until the update has finished. iTunes checks for both carrier and software updates.

 

Issues after updating

If you experience issues after updating to the latest software version, reset your device settings:

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory.
  2. From the Home screen, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset Reset All Settings.
  4. Type in the device password if prompted. If Apple FMiP Activation Lock is enabled, you will need access to the internet.
  5. Confirm selection.

If resetting the settings does not work, you may need to perform a master reset.

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory.
  2. From the Home screen, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings > Continue.
  4. Type in the device password if prompted. If Apple FMiP Activation Lock is enabled, you will need access to the internet.
  5. Confirm selection.
