DSL, cable, fiber, fixed wireless (5G Home Internet), and satellite are the most common options.

What are the main types of internet connections?

Fiber or cable may provide more consistent performance for video calls and uploads.

What internet is best for working from home?

It may work as an alternative depending on location and signal strength.

Can 5G Home Internet replace cable?

Yes. It generally supports online gaming, though performance depends on signal strength and network traffic.

Can I game on 5G home internet?

Most home setups use a router to connect multiple devices.

Do I need a router with all internet types?

It may work for basic use, especially where other options are limited.

Is DSL still a good internet option?

This is usually a Wi-Fi issue—common causes include distance from the router, interference, or too many connected devices.

Why is my WiFi slow when my internet speed test shows fast speeds?

You can search by address through provider websites.

How do I check internet availability in my area?

Often, yes, depending on your building, provider availability, and existing wiring. Some renters may be able to use an existing coaxial outlet, fiber terminal, phone jack, Ethernet port, self-install kit, or wireless home internet gateway. Confirm what is available at your exact unit address.

Can I get internet in an apartment without drilling holes?

Options may include cable internet through an existing coaxial outlet, fiber through an existing terminal, DSL through an active phone jack, building-provided internet, or wireless home internet through a plug-in gateway. Availability and setup requirements vary by address and provider.

What internet options work without installing hardware?

You may not need special permission for a plug-in or self-install setup that uses existing active wiring. However, you should ask for approval if setup requires drilling, new wiring, mounted equipment, exterior hardware, technician access to restricted building areas, or changes to the unit.

Do I need landlord permission to set up internet?

Often, yes, but building rules may apply. A technician may need permission to enter the building, wiring closet, utility room, or apartment. If installation requires drilling or new wiring, you may want to get written approval first.

Can a technician install internet if I rent?

Ask which providers serve the building, whether internet is included, which outlets are active, whether self-install is available, whether technician visits are allowed, and whether drilling, mounting, or exterior equipment is restricted.

What should I ask my leasing office before ordering internet?

Check for other connection points, such as Ethernet ports, phone jacks, fiber terminals, or building-provided equipment. You can also ask providers what services are available at your exact unit address and whether any option works without new wiring.

What if my apartment does not have a coaxial outlet?

Place it in an open location near a power outlet, following the provider’s placement guidance. Some gateways may work better near a window or in a part of the apartment with a stronger signal. Test a few allowed locations before settling on one.

Where should I put a wireless home internet gateway?

Often, yes, but compatibility depends on your provider and service type. Check provider requirements before buying equipment, especially if your plan requires a specific modem, gateway, or activation process.

Can I use my own router in a rental apartment?

Use furniture placement, short cable runs, and removable cable management products only if they are allowed by your lease and safe for your wall surface. Avoid staples, nails, screws, or anything that punctures walls, trim, or flooring.

How do I hide internet cables without damaging walls?

Mesh Wi-Fi may be renter-friendly when the nodes can sit on furniture and only need power outlets. It may help if your apartment has dead zones, thick walls, or a layout where one router does not reach every room well.

Is mesh Wi-Fi renter-friendly?

Learn what an optical network terminal (ONT) is, how it works in a fiber internet setup, its key components, and how it compares to ONUs, modems, and routers.

What Is an ONT? Optical Network Terminals Explained | T-Mobile

https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/the-signal/_admin/uploads/2026/07/plugging-in-fiber-optic-cable-data-center.jpg

What is an ONT? Optical Network Terminals Explained

No. The ONT terminates the fiber connection and converts the signal, while the router shares that internet connection across your devices and usually handles Wi-Fi. Some units combine both functions, which can make the setup look simpler than it is.

Is an ONT the same as a router?

The internet provider usually installs the ONT during the fiber setup appointment. It is typically placed near where the fiber enters the home and connected to power before the rest of the network is brought online.

Who installs the ONT?

Yes. ONTs are often installed inside the home, but some deployments place them outside depending on the provider’s design and the building layout.

Can an ONT be outside the house?

Because it is an active device, not just a passive cable. It must be powered to convert the fiber signal into electrical data for your network.

Why does my ONT need power?

Start with the basics: power, cable connections, and status lights on the ONT and router. If either device is unplugged, misconnected, or showing an error light, that is usually the fastest place to begin.

What should I check first if the internet is down?

Fiber uses light to move data, which helps reduce interference and signal loss. That gives it a strong advantage for speed, reliability, and long-distance performance.

Why is fiber often faster than copper?

The quickest clue is usually the status lights, plus whether your router is receiving internet service through the Ethernet connection. If the ONT has power but the connection still fails, the issue may be with the fiber signal, the router, or the provider’s service path.

How do I know if my ONT is working normally?

Fiber is the best fit. Its symmetrical speeds and low latency keep video calls stable, accelerate uploads, and make cloud collaboration feel instant. If fiber is not available, look for high‑upload cable plans or well‑performing 5G fixed wireless tested at your location.

What internet type is best for a small business that relies on video calls, cloud apps, and large file transfers?

Use per‑user ranges based on workload: light (2–5 Mbps down, 1–2 Mbps up), moderate (10–25 Mbps down, 5–10 Mbps up), and heavy (25–50 Mbps down, 10–25 Mbps up). Multiply by simultaneous users, then add 20–30% headroom. Prioritize upload speed for frequent video calls and file sharing.

How should a 1–10 person team estimate the bandwidth they need?

Fiber is the gold standard for speed, reliability, and symmetrical performance - if it’s available, it’s typically the best choice. If not, both cable and 5G fixed wireless can be strong alternatives: cable offers broad availability and reliable downloads for everyday business needs, while 5G can deliver comparable performance with fast setup and flexible deployment in covered areas. DSL is generally best reserved as a budget or last-resort option for light use where other services aren’t available.

When should a very small business choose cable, 5G fixed wireless, or DSL instead of fiber?

Residential plans can work for solo operators, but business-class internet usually offers better uptime, priority support, optional SLAs, and features like static IPs. If internet downtime directly impacts sales, appointments, or clients, business service is typically worth the cost.

Do small businesses really need business-class internet, or is residential service enough?

Upload speed is critical for video calls, cloud backups, file sharing, live social posting, and security cameras. Many teams feel slowdowns from limited uploads before they hit download limits, especially with multiple people on calls at once.

How important is upload speed for a very small business?

For light to moderate use, plan for at least 100 Mbps download and 20–50 Mbps upload. This supports HD video calls, cloud apps, and background sync with room to spare. Heavier use or frequent uploads benefit from higher or symmetrical speeds.

What’s a good minimum speed for a one-person or two-person business?

It can be, but testing is essential. Run speed and latency checks during your busiest hours and confirm stable uploads. Many small businesses use 5G fixed wireless successfully for POS, often with a cellular hotspot or wired backup for redundancy.

Is 5G fixed wireless reliable enough for point-of-sale (POS) systems?

If internet access directly affects revenue, a backup connection is smart. A common setup is a primary wired service (fiber or cable) paired with 5G fixed wireless or a hotspot for automatic or manual failover during outages.

Should a small business have a backup internet connection?

Not always, but SLAs are valuable for operations where downtime means lost revenue or missed appointments. An SLA typically offers faster repair times and uptime commitments, which can justify the added cost for client-facing businesses.

Do I need a Service Level Agreement (SLA) as a very small business?

A modern router with strong Wi-Fi coverage, WPA3 security, and guest network support matters as much as raw internet speed. For most small businesses, Wi-Fi 6 or newer helps handle multiple devices smoothly.

What equipment matters most for small teams?

Guest Wi-Fi increases bandwidth demand and can pose security risks if not separated. Use a router that supports guest networks to isolate customer traffic from POS systems, staff devices, and internal tools.

How does guest Wi-Fi affect performance and security?

Month-to-month plans offer flexibility, especially for new, seasonal, or fast-changing businesses. Longer contracts may lower monthly costs but can lock you in if your needs change or better options become available.

Are contracts or month-to-month plans better for small businesses?

Review your plan annually or whenever your team grows, adds new tools, or changes how it works. Video usage, cloud storage, and security needs tend to increase over time, often making higher uploads or better reliability worthwhile.

How often should a small business reevaluate its internet plan?

Focusing only on download speed. Many performance issues stem from limited uploads, unreliable hardware, or lack of headroom during peak hours rather than insufficient download capacity.

What’s the most common mistake small businesses make when choosing internet?

Choosing Between Hybrid Fiber-Coax vs. Full Fiber (FTTH): What You Need to Know

HFC uses coax for the last mile, while FTTH runs fiber directly into the home.

What’s the biggest difference between HFC and FTTH?

DOCSIS is the technology that allows internet to travel over the same coaxial cables that were originally built for cable TV. DOCSIS 4.0 is the latest version, enhancing HFC with faster speeds and lower latency than earlier versions.

What is DOCSIS 4.0, and will it extend HFC’s life?

Enhanced HFC can deliver gigabit uploads and downloads with DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0, but uploads often remain limited.

Can HFC match fiber speeds?

Coax cable often reserves more bandwidth for downloads. Fiber supports nearly equal upload and download speeds.

Are uploads slower on HFC?

It depends on your provider, location, and more.

Does FTTH cost more per month?
