Samsung Galaxy S24 vs. S23 Series: Is It Time to Upgrade to a Galaxy-AI Phone?

With Galaxy AI baked-in and the promise of updates through 2031, the new S24 series has everyone talking! But how does it compare to the already impressive S23 lineup? We'll take a look at the S23s and S24s, including features like AI-phone capabilities, performance, design, display, battery power, price and more—so you can decide for yourself.
Samsung Galaxy S23 next to Samsung Galaxy S24

Like the S23s, the S24 series features three phones: the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra. But the new year brings with it advanced, on-board AI-phone capabilities, a whopping seven years of updates, a powerful new processor, and an all-new titanium design option. But let's start with the feature that has everyone talking: Galaxy AI.

Samsung Galaxy AI Makes its Debut

The biggest change to the latest Samsung Galaxy lineup is, without a doubt, Galaxy AI. The S24 series is the very first to have artificial intelligence capabilities baked-in to its core functions. So, how groundbreaking is this new AI-phone tech? Here are some cool features that have a lot of people wanting to upgrade to the S24s right away:

  • Generative Edit. With AI-based photo editing, you can instantly move or remove objects in your photos, fill empty space, get rid of reflections and more in seconds instead of minutes (or even hours)—allowing you to create amazing and shareable photos and memories.
  • Circle to Search with Google. Just circle (highlight, scribble, or tap) to pinpoint any image, video, or text on your screen, no screenshots required. For example, you see a stunning landmark and want to know where it is; you spot a delicious dish and want the recipe; there's an actor whose face you can't place. Just circle it to search on Google and get all the information you need!
  • Live Translate. Open up a world of new possibilities with the Live Translate feature on the Samsung Phone app. Now you'll get near-real-time, two-way translation that supports 13 languages via voice or text, breaking down communication barriers at work, on vacation and beyond. Book dinner reservations in Italy. Talk to clients abroad. Chat with your Great Aunt Sofia in Mexico. It's all possible with Live Translate.
  • Note Assist. Perfect for classrooms, conference rooms and more, notetaking has never been simpler. Just jot down the important stuff and let Note Assist do the rest, including summarizing, formatting, organizing and even translating notes for you.
  • Chat Assist. The new Chat Assist feature gives you real-time tone suggestions, whether your goal is to sound more conversational or more professional. Plus, it also takes care of any annoying typos.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series performance

While the S23s feature the impressive Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the S24s get Samsung's fastest processor yet: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The ultrapowerful processor is great news for multitaskers who love to switch between apps seamlessly, gamers who crave incredible graphics on high settings, or anyone who demands power and speed. Best of all, your phone keeps its cool thanks to improved cooling systems designed to keep device thermals low during high-performance activities. The new series also comes with the latest Android 14 software experience on board, boasting new widgets, fonts, notification options and security capabilities. Another cool thing about the S24s? Samsung is promising  seven years of Android and security updates that'll have you covered until 2031—that's several years more than what the S23 series offered.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series storage

Like the entry-level S23, the S24 also features 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, while the S24+ gets a little upgrade over its predecessor, offering a boost in RAM at 12GB while keeping max storage at 512GB. The Ultra versions of both phones deliver up to 12GB of RAM and 1TB max.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series design & display

In terms of overall design, the Galaxy S24 series phones don't get a huge overhaul, although things will look at lot better on the (mostly) bigger and definitely brighter screens. The standard S24 display jumps in size a tad from 6.1 to 6.2 inches, the S24+ goes from 6.6 to 6.7 inches, and the S24 Ultra holds steady at 6.8 inches, although the flatter edge-to-edge design makes it feel a lot bigger. Like its predecessor, the S24 Ultra is still the only one in the bunch that has a built-in S Pen stylus—delivering exciting ways to work, play, multitask, and create on-the-go. The most notable change to the Ultra in terms of looks is its strong and sleek titanium shell—and it’s the only phone in the lineup that has it!

As for colors, the Galaxy S24 series comes in four standard options: black, gray, violet and yellow. The S23's standard colors are black, pink, white, green.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series batteries

Battery power will get a boost with the S24 series. The standard Galaxy S24 will get an extra 100mAh—now featuring 4,000mAh—while the S24+ goes up 200mAh over its predecessor to hit 4,900mAh. The S24 Ultra remains the same at 5,000mAh. But with the newer, more efficient chip, you'll likely see improved battery performance across all three phones. As for fast charging, the new phones will stick with the same wired/wireless numbers of 25W/15W for the S24—and 45W/15W for the S24+ and Ultra.

As with the S23 series, the S24 series chargers are sold separately.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series cameras

The basic camera setups on the S24 and S24+ remain the same as those on previous iterations, featuring a 50MP camera that lets you capture everything in stunning detail. But with the help of advanced-AI features, you'll enjoy better true-to-life photos and crystal-clear videos, whether you're in a bustling city or a serene natural landscape. Just point and shoot and let the phone adjust each hue and shade. The S24 Ultra includes an impressive 200MP main camera and a new 5x optical zoom lens, as well as AI-features like Nightography Zoom, which lets you capture detail from a distance, even in the dark, for absolutely incredible low-light shots.

Galaxy S24 vs. S23 series pricing

Price-wise, the S24 series is in line the S23 series, but you'll pay more for the top-of-the-line phone. The S24 starts around $800, the S24+ at $1,000 and Ultra will go for about $1,300 (about $100 more than the S23 Ultra). Of course, if you're in the market for an S23, it's worth noting that Samsung will likely slash prices on all three models with the release S24 devices.
