Learn how to view free space and free up storage on the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Adjust storage settings

Follow these tips to prevent your ROM storage from quickly filling up.

Set text and multimedia message limits to delete messages automatically. The default is 200 text and 20 picture messages. You may use this setting to start with, and decrease it if you continue to have problems.

  1. From any Home screen, tap Messages > Menu > Settings > More settings.
  2. Tap the Delete old messages slider to turn on.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Gmail > Menu > Settings.
  3. Tap your email address.
  4. Tap Days of mail to sync.
  5. Swipe down until 3 is selected, then tap OK.

Clear storage regularly

Clearing storage at least once per week is best. Check the available internal device storage (see "View free storage space," below).

It must be over 150 MB for your device. The Android system cannot work properly if the internal device storage is below 150 MB. If under 150 MB, use the following tips to clear more storage:

  • Delete unnecessary text messages (SMS) and picture messages (MMS).
  • Transfer pictures and media to a computer or SD card to remove them from the phone memory.
  • Clear the browser cache, cookies, or history.
  • Clear Facebook app cache.
  • Manage applications.
  • Delete the call logs.

Manage applications

Monitor new applications that you install.

  • If your device starts having problems after installing an application, consider uninstalling the application.
  • Consider uninstalling apps using large amounts of ROM.
    1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
    2. Tap Settings > Apps.
    3. Tap the desired application to be uninstalled.
    4. Tap Uninstall > OK.

View free storage space

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Device Care > Storage.
  3. View the Available space value.
