How can I return the device I am trading in?

If you started your trade-in with a T-Mobile store, T-Mobile customer service, on the T-Mobile website, or in the T-Mobile app, you have the option to return your old device to any T-Mobile store or ship it back to us. If you started your trade-in outside of these T-Mobile channels (for example, with Costco or Wireless Advocates), you must ship us your old device.

1. Return your old device to a T-Mobile store:

It’s fast & easy! Just stop by a T-Mobile store and let a Mobile Expert know you want to return your trade-in device. We will validate the condition of your device – once validated, we’ll handle the rest! Find a store here Mobile Phones, Plans & Covers at a T-Mobile Store Near You | T-Mobile

2. Ship your old device to us:

Once you complete your purchase, we'll ship your new device. You'll also receive a link for a prepaid shipping label to send in your trade-in device. When you ship it, you will be responsible for accurately evaluating and packing the device so that it remains in the same condition (as originally indicated) during shipping. T-Mobile is not responsible for any damage sustained during shipping.

How do I check the condition of my device?

It’s easy! You will answer 4 device condition questions to help us determine the estimated trade-in value of your trade-in device:

  • Before sending in your phone, you will disable “Find my Phone”
  • The front display is not cracked or damaged
  • There is no liquid damage or internal moisture
  • Your device powers on and stays on

Check out additional tips to ensure you accurately validate the condition of your device.

How is the Trade-in value of my old device calculated?

The value is based on the device's make, model, and condition. If a device shows signs of excessive wear or damage, it may still be accepted with reduced value or may be ineligible for a promotion.

How can I use my trade-in value?

With a trade-in completed in a T-Mobile retail store, here’s how you can use your trade-in value:

  1. Apply credit towards your total due today (includes accessories, down payment, and taxes)
  2. Apply credit toward existing Equipment Installment Plan (EIP)
  3. Apply towards new EIP balance to reduce monthly payment

Any trade-in credit left over will be applied as a one-time bill credit.

With a trade-in completed online, you will receive a one-time bill credit within 2 bill cycles after your device is received and processed at our warehouse.

If I qualify for a device promotion that requires a trade-in, how will I receive my trade-in credits?

  • Trading in instantly at a store: Example: If you qualify for an $800 off iPhone promo and your old device has a trade-in value of $225.
    • You will receive instant trade-in credit of $225 to use towards in-store purchases (device, accessories, etc.) or a one-time bill credit.
    • Remainder of the promotional value $575 ($800 - $225) is applied as recurring bill credits over your 24-month EIP, so you will get a $23.95 bill credit each month for the next 24 months)
  • Trading in online: Example: If you qualify for an $800 off iPhone promo and your old device has a trade-in value of $225.
    • You will receive a one-time bill credit of $225.

How long will it take to receive trade-in credits as part of a promotion?

  • You must have an active account and in good standing and allow up to 2 bill cycles to start receiving your recurring trade-in promotion credits.
  • If you do not return your trade-in device within 30 days from receiving your new device, you will be un-enrolled from any associated promotions and charged full price for your new device. You will receive reminder notifications in 15 days and again in 30 days from the day your new device was shipped.

After I submit my trade-in request online, what happens next?

  • You will get an email or text message with details on how to return your old device.
  • Once you complete your purchase, we'll ship your new device. You'll also receive a link for a prepaid shipping label to send in your trade-in device.
  • At this point, you still have the choice to return the device to a T-Mobile retail store or ship us your old device within 30 days of receiving your new device.
  • Before shipping your device back, you will need to turn off activation locks like Find My iPhone and Google activation locks to avoid processing delays and losing your trade in value.
  • Do a final validation that the device you are sending back is the same device you received a trade-in estimate for. If the wrong device is sent back or the condition is different than originally stated, you will be notified of next steps, which may include being un-enrolled in any promotion you may have been eligible for.
  • The final step is to perform a master reset of your device to remove your personal information and remove the SIM card and/or any additional memory cards.
  • T-Mobile also recommends that you document, your IMEI and your RMA # and keep for your records.

I changed my mind. Can I get my old device back?

Device trade-in transactions are final. After you accept the trade-in credit and send us your phone, you cannot get it back.

What if I return my new device but I already traded in my old device for a promotion?

If you return your new device within our return period and you already traded-in your old device for a promotion, T-Mobile will issue the originally estimated value of your old device as monthly bill credits since your trade-in device cannot be returned.
