Edward “Smitty” Smith is executive vice president and chief public policy officer of T-Mobile, where he is responsible for shaping and safeguarding the company’s policy, regulatory and governmental interests worldwide, and advising the company on issues critical to enterprise growth, risk management and innovation.
Smitty joined T-Mobile in 2023 after serving as U.S. and global chair of DLA Piper’s Regulatory and Government Affairs Practice, where he built one of the world’s largest regulatory and government affairs legal practices. He served on the firm’s U.S. Executive Committee and as managing partner of its Washington, D.C., office.
He earned perennial inclusion in Washingtonian Magazine’s list of the 500 Most Influential People Shaping Policy in Washington, D.C., and was recognized by Chambers USA, Legal 500, Law360 and Financial Times as one of the nation’s leading telecommunications lawyers.
Smitty has served as legal counsel to T-Mobile for nearly a decade, playing a central role as telecommunications regulatory counsel in the company’s historic merger with Sprint and advising the company on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters. Earlier in his career, he served in senior roles across the federal government, including at the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Smitty earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the bar in New York and Washington, D.C.
