Winter brings a lot of goodness -- friends and family, holidays and celebrations -- but it can also bring tough weather and dangerous storms. Snow, sleet, ice and wind create treacherous conditions that lead to power and network outages.
Rest assured, we’re ready. T-Mobile’s engineers have been actively preparing for winter conditions throughout the season so we can quickly respond to network outages just as soon as it’s safe to do so. Before storms hit, we set up an engineering command center and deploy rapid-response teams to minimize potential interruptions to wireless service. In addition, T-Mobile’s Geo-Redundant Network Operation Centers (NOCs) closely manage network traffic and further coordinate the response. In short – we’ve got you.
Now, want to take steps to get yourself ready? Here are a few tips:
- Keep phones and devices fully charged. There is nothing quite like losing power when your phone is at 4% battery, so make sure to keep your devices full of juice.
- Have additional chargers and battery back-ups stored at home, work and in your car. Back-up batteries are crucial if power goes out, particularly at home and work. In case you get stranded while traveling, you’ll want to have a charger handy so you can connect with loved ones. If you need to stock up, there are some great options here.
- Pre-program important numbers in your phone. In an emergency, you want to have your kids’ school, your boss, local police and fire departments, power company, etc. readily accessible to call.
Be prepared at home in case of power outages or being snowed in:
- Have flashlights and batteries ready. Make sure they are in working order and easy to find if power goes out at night! Be careful using candles, too!
- Stock up on non-perishable food and water. If the power goes out, food in your refrigerator can go bad quickly.
- Keep coolers on hand. In case the power goes out, you may be able to keep refrigerated food longer if you have coolers and ice.
Even with advanced preparation, service interruptions can happen, particularly if there are power outages. If your service is interrupted during a storm, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Stay safe and calm. Our engineers are aware of outages immediately and will work 24/7 to get service restored as quickly as possible.
- Hazardous conditions may cause delays. Downed trees, power outages, and other obstacles can hinder restoration efforts. Engineers will make repairs as soon as it’s safe to do so!
- If you still have power but no mobile service, try Wi-Fi calling, which lets T-Mobile customers with capable devices to text and make and receive calls via a Wi-Fi connection. For Apple phones, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and for Android phones, go to Settings > More Connection Settings > Wi-Fi Calling
If you still have a connection to the T-Mobile network during and after a storm, here are a few reminders:
- Send a text instead of calling. Text messages are more likely to get through a wireless network during high-usage periods because they take up fewer network resources.
- If you need to make a call, consider keeping it short so others can also get through. The number of calls typically spikes during severe weather events, so keeping the lines free for emergency workers and your neighbors would be appreciated!
