T-Mobile LTE Network Ranks #1 in Speed in Philly

November 06, 2014

Already faster than Verizon, AT&T and Sprint in Philly, the Un-carrier’s network gets even speedier with a Wideband LTE upgrade – with observed download speeds as high as 95 Mbps

Bellevue, Washington – November 7, 2014 – T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS) today announced that, according to thousands of crowd-sourced speed tests – its LTE network is the fastest in Philadelphia. T-Mobile customers in these areas are seeing average download speeds faster than Verizon, two times as fast as AT&T and almost two and half times faster than Sprint. From the Philadelphia Zoo to the Betsy Ross House and in areas outside the city, T-Mobile customers have observed download speeds as high as 95 Mbps with average download speeds of 28 Mbps in October 2014.

Those speeds are good news for Philadelphia customers who on average use 2.5 GB of data per month. What’s even better news is that T-Mobile has made things even faster in the Philadelphia area by recently upgrading its LTE network to Wideband LTE, bringing up to a 50% increase in speed to customers in major cities including Philadelphia, Allentown, Harrisburg, Lancaster and State College. Surrounding areas such as Dover, DE and Atlantic City and Trenton, NJ have also received a speed boost from Wideband LTE.

Wideband LTE doubles the bandwidth and increases the capacity of T-Mobile’s LTE network to help deliver faster peak speeds. It is like adding more lanes to a freeway for all LTE customers to speed along in. With T-Mobile’s Wideband LTE, customers can download a full 90 minute HD movie in three and half minutes or a whole album in just nine seconds with theoretical peak download speeds of 110 Mbps.

“Our Philadelphia T-Mobile customers are used to a strong, fast network but they are going to love the even faster speeds that Wideband LTE offers,” said Tom Ellefson, Vice President – Engineering, T-Mobile. “Every one of our T-Mobile LTE customers in the Philadelphia area can immediately take advantage of this network upgrade for free.”

The greater Philadelphia area is just the latest to get a speed boost, as the Un-carrier continues to expand coverage and enhance performance of its 4G LTE network. Wideband LTE has already been rolled out in the following areas:

  • Atlanta, GA
  • Greater Bay Area, CA
  • Birmingham, AL
  • Columbus, OH
  • Connecticut
  • Dallas, TX
  • Detroit, MI
  • Honolulu, HI
  • Houston, TX
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Mobile, AL
  • Orlando, FL
  • Portland, OR
  • Seattle, WA
  • Tampa, FL
  • Upstate New York Area

Often imitated, never duplicated, T-Mobile’s Data-Strong™ network, the fastest nationwide 4G LTE network, now reaches 250 million people and was the first to launch:

  • Next-gen Wi-Fi Calling in September 2014
  • Nationwide HD Voice in January 2013
  • Nationwide Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in July 2014
