20 Percent of Layer3 TV subscribers watched at least one episode of “Planet Earth II,” and The New Cable’s® promotion surrounding the critically acclaimed series drove viewers to other BBC AMERICA series, which increased sampling and viewership for sister networks AMC, IFC and SundanceTV on Layer3 TV’s next-generation cable platform.

The availability of 4K content is altering pay television viewing habits. Earlier this year, AMC Networks’ BBC AMERICA made the critically acclaimed series “Planet Earth II” available to Layer3 TV subscribers in 4K and interest in the series drove higher engagement by Layer3 TV customers on BBC AMERICA and on sister networks AMC, IFC and SundanceTV.

Beginning February 19, every Layer3 TV subscriber received video on demand (VOD) in 4K access to BBC AMERICAS’s “Planet Earth II”– free of any additional fees – to compliment the linear BBC AMERICA network (carried in allHD™ on channel 61), where the 2016 British nature documentary series originally aired. “Planet Earth II” is the sequel to the Peabody award-winning 2006 “Planet Earth,” presented and narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Since the series’ VOD premiere on February 19th, 20 percent of all Layer3 TV subscribers have watched at least one “Planet Earth II” episode, making it Layer3 TV’s second-most viewed episode, film or movie on demand from Layer3 TV’s VOD library which currently exceeds 22,000 assets.

The excitement surrounding ‘Planet Earth II’ in 4K/UHD delivers on Layer3 TV’s promise to delight the customer at every touch point, and appears to have translated into dramatically greater awareness and viewership of BBC AMERICA’s scheduled programming,” said Layer3 TV Chief Content Officer Lindsay Gardner.

“A friend told me about “Planet Earth II” and we easily found it under On Demand in 4K,” said Layer3 TV subscriber Sophie Arnold, who lives in Chicago. “We kept seeing previews for ‘Doctor Who’ and now we’re hooked on that.” “Doctor Who,” BBC America’s iconic sci-fi series, follows the adventures of the Doctor, the mysterious traveler who, with his human and alien companions, journeys throughout all of time and space, facing a variety of foes and righting wrongs.

The impact that 4K content is having on BBC AMERICA’s awareness and Layer3 TV viewership serves as notice of 4K’s importance,” continued Gardner. “And, not only is BBC AMERICA enjoying higher viewership on Layer3 TV, but so are sister networks AMC, IFC, and SundanceTV.

Layer3 TV defined each network’s rank by the total number of subscribers tuning into each network for at least one minute, regardless of market, during the two month viewing period following the addition of “Planet Earth II”.
