Layer3 TV Co-founder and CTO to fill role of Chief Scientist.
Dave Fellows, co-founder and chief technology officer of Layer3 TV, has joined the leadership team of the cable industry’s landmark Energy 2020 program, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announced today.
Fellows, who will fill the role of chief scientist, will work closely with the Energy 2020 program’s key stakeholders to accelerate the industry’s strategic approach to energy resource management. Fellows will be responsible for connecting the outputs of the nine Energy 2020 Working Groups to ensure alignment with the vision of the Energy 2020 Steering Committee and Core Team.
The work that the Energy 2020 team has undertaken will have positive impacts on our industry, our customers and our communities,” said Fellows. “Our goal is to make Layer3 TV the greenest cable company in the world, and we believe there is great importance in helping our industry as a whole to develop technologies that place energy and the environment on equal footings with bandwidth and other valuable network resources.
Energy 2020 brings together cable operator and vendor expertise to create alignment on standards and operational practices, to drive design and implementation of equipment, and to create SCTE training resources that will enable workforce teams to optimize technology for maximum efficiency. Energy 2020 is targeting the following goals by the end of the decade: reduction of power consumption by 20 percent on a unit basis; energy cost reduction by 25 percent on a unit basis; reduction of grid dependency by 10 percent; and optimization of technical facilities and datacenters footprint by 20 percent.
A key milestone on the Energy 2020 roadmap is the weaving of new standards and operational practices into our cohesive long-term strategy,” said John Schanz, Chief Network Officer and Executive Vice President of Comcast Cable and co-chair of Energy 2020. “With his vision, industry expertise and organizational skills, Dave Fellows is the catalyst we need to help our working groups come to conclusions on solutions to technical problems.
With more than 35 years in the cable industry, Fellows has served as CTO of Comcast, AT&T Broadband and numerous other cable operators, was president of Scientific Atlanta’s transmission business and served as general partner of Genovation Capital and Pilot House Ventures. He currently serves as chair of the SCTE Data Standards Subcommittee, an ANSI-approved body for data, voice and networking standards.
