On the Front Lines of Hurricane Preparedness: T‑Mobile at the National Hurricane Conference

At T-Mobile, emergency response means helping customers, communities and first responders stay connected when it matters most. Our teams prepare year-round so that when hurricanes and other emergencies hit, they can rapidly deploy to boost and restore service; support partners and agencies with critical connectivity; and help customers reach loved ones, first responders and essential information.

That work is why T-Mobile’s emergency response team members are on-site at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando this week, alongside thousands of public- and private-sector partners focused on improving hurricane preparedness, response and recovery.

As the conference moves into its second day, opening sessions have already brought together a range of perspectives—from National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan to emergency response leaders like the Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Knighton from Asheville, North Carolina, who shared firsthand experiences from Hurricane Helene, to longtime storm tracker Mike Sudduth, who reflected on lessons learned over decades in the field. The discussions have underscored the importance of preparedness, coordination and continuous learning across the emergency management community.

From Severe Weather to Major Events

In just the last two months, T-Mobile mobilized to support customers through the recent Kona Storm in Hawai’isevere weather in the Midwest and central U.S. and a winter storm across the east coast. While these events differ in scale and type, they demand many of the same capabilities as hurricanes: resilient network planning, rapid deployment, real-time coordination and fast restoration efforts.

T-Mobile’s preparation includes continual investments in tools and technologies that strengthen both our network and response capabilities, including:

  • Self-Organizing Network (SON) technology that automatically monitors and optimizes network performance in real time. It can reconfigure network settings, including tilting antennas, redirecting traffic and extending backup power.
  • AI tools like Dataminr that enable us to track emerging threats, weather developments and other public information in real time.
  • T-Satellite with Starlink, a satellite-to-mobile solution that can automatically connect to most smartphones when terrestrial towers are down, allowing people to send texts to family, friends or 911.
  • T-Priority, T-Mobile’s cutting-edge emergency response solution that combines a dedicated 5G network slice with an ecosystem of tools, from drones and AI-powered applications to deployables and a dedicated emergency response team.

T-Mobile’s emergency response teams also manage connectivity demands at major events that place unique pressure on communications, coordination and network performance. During New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, T-Mobile teams were on the ground monitoring network performance and helping keep people connected along the route. And ahead of The Big Game in Levi’s Stadium this past February, T-Mobile completed major upgrades to nearby cell sites and infrastructure, deployed on-site network assets and technology to supplement the network and placed network engineers inside local emergency operations to help ensure fans and public safety stayed connected.
