February 07, 2023

Curious about Samsung's 2023 & 2022 flagship smartphones? Here are the key differences between performance, design & display, batteries, camera, pricing, camera specs & more.

With the new year comes yet another sleek collection of highly anticipated new Samsung Galaxy phones for 2023! So, what are the big changes you can expect with the Samsung S23 series?

Take a deep dive and compare the differences between the Galaxy S22 and S23, including features like design, display, price, performance and other specs — so you can find the perfect phone for you — while making the most of America’s largest and fastest 5G network.

Galaxy S23 vs. S22 series performance

Like the S22, the S23 series features three 5G phones: the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra. But the new year brings new upgrades in performance, with each S23 phone boasting a custom new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy (made exclusively for Samsung Galaxy phones), as well as a better cooling system, and up to 30% faster speeds. You’ll also notice all three S23 Galaxy models use Wi-Fi 6E technology - that’s quite a difference compared to the S22 series because Wi-Fi 6E is only available on the S22 Ultra and S22+. Pair that with T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity 5G and you've unleashed a world of possibilities when it comes to amped-up performance, super-fast download and upload speeds, not to mention more 5G bars in more places.

As for storage you also see a boost. The S23+ will feature 8GB of RAM with 256 and 512GB of storage and the S23 offers 128 and 256GB, compared with the S22 and S22+ versions, both offering a maximum storage option of 256GB. The S23 Ultra, like its predecessor, will deliver up to 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. However, the1TB option will be available through Samsung only.

Galaxy S23 vs. S22 series design & display

In terms of overall size, the Galaxy S23 series phones, the S23 and S23+ remains unchanged with triple-camera blocks and FHD+ AMOLED displays. The Galaxy S23 Ultra upgrades to the WQHD+ display. The standard S23 holds steady at 6.1 inches, the S22+ at 6.6 inches, and the S22 Ultra at 6.8-inch inches. The S23 Ultra is still the only one in the bunch that's a Note-style phone with built-in S Pen stylus — giving you exciting new ways to work, play, multitask and create on the go. One very nice change across the board for the new Galaxy S23 series: The phones now feature the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max fingerprint reader — boasting one of the fastest unlocks available on the market.

As for colors, the Galaxy S23 series will have slightly different options depending on the model you choose. They include Cream, Lavender, Green and Phantom Black. The S22 series offers the following options, also depending on the model: Phantom White, Phantom Black, Sky Blue, Pink Gold, Red, Burgundy and Violet.

Galaxy S23 vs. S22 series batteries

Battery power will get a boost with the S23 series. The standard Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ will get an extra 200mAh — featuring 3900mAh and 4700mAh batteries respectively, versus the previous versions, which maxed out at 3700mAh and 4500mAh. The S23 Ultra remains the same at 5000mAh. But with the newer, more efficient chip and display, battery performance should still be improved across all three phones. As for fast charging, the new phones will stick with the same 25W max for the S23 — and 45W max for the S23+ and S23 Ultra. It is worth noting to take advantage of Galaxy S23+ and S23 Ultra's 45W charging capability, you’ll need a 5amp USB cable and 45W wall adapter bundle (sold separately).

FYI: Just like its predecessor, the S23 series does not include a charger in the box, so you might have to purchase one separately, unless you happen to have an extra one lying around.

Galaxy S23 vs. S22 series cameras

The triple-camera setups on the S23 and S23+ remain the same as those on previous iterations. The S23 and S23+ front cameras are upgraded to 12MP from 10MP, the main cameras at 50MP and each boasts the same 10MP zoom lenses.

The S23 Ultra will get a new 200MP main camera vs. the 108MP camera on its predecessor. The phone's other cameras hold the status quo, with a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and two 10MP cameras for additional zoom capabilities — all working together to deliver bright, detailed photographs and crystal-clear 8K videos.

Galaxy S23 vs. S22 series pricing

Fortunately, the S23s won't bring any big price hikes along for the ride. Just like the S22s, starting prices will range from $799.99 to $1199.99, depending on the device. Of course, if you're in the market for an S22, it's worth noting that Samsung has since specifically slashed prices on the GS22 model with the release of the new S23 devices.
