When a first responder gets the call, their family may not know what’s happening or when they’ll be back. For Madison, whose father served as a firefighter and paramedic with LA County Fire, that uncertainty taught her that preparedness started at home.
Now pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, Madison is also a scholarship recipient of the First Responder Children’s Foundation. She remembers the routines that helped her family feel ready. They kept emergency supplies in the garage, knew where to find water during an earthquake and regularly discussed what to do in an emergency. When her dad responded to fires and other incidents, Madison felt proud of the work he was doing to help others.
Those lessons stayed with her. She still keeps her car’s gas tank at least a quarter full and sleeps with the bedroom door closed, knowing a closed door can help slow the spread of fire and provide valuable extra time in an emergency.
“Whenever I’m going to the mountains or anything, I always have an extra pair of clothes, a little bit of food. I think just having a stash of anything you need that could maybe last you a day or so — I guess all these are just to buy yourself time in an emergency situation,” Madison said.
First Responder Children's Foundation Recipient, Madison, Share How Her Family Prepares for Emergencies
Madison’s experience reflects a reality shared by many first responder families: service extends beyond the person wearing the uniform.
__This National First Responders Day, T‑Mobile and the First Responders Children’s Foundation (FRCF) are recognizing both first responders and the families who support them.__ As part of this year’s nationwide celebration, T‑Mobile and FRCF are honoring local heroes through first responder appreciation events at stores across the country, while FRCF’s annual Roll Call of Heroes ceremony in New York City today, Oct. 28, recognizes first responders whose service and leadership have made a lasting impact on their communities.
“The people we honor on National First Responders Day aren’t looking for recognition. They’re focused on doing their jobs, saving lives and taking care of their communities,” said Jillian Crane, President and CEO of First Responders Children’s Foundation. “Recognizing their service means so much to the children and families who stand behind them. With T‑Mobile’s support, we’re bringing recognition to communities across the country, giving more people a chance to celebrate their hometown heroes.”
The preparedness Madison learned growing up is rooted in a simple principle: being ready before an emergency makes a difference when it matters most. That same focus on preparation is central to how T‑Mobile supports first responders.
__Supporting first responders is a year-round commitment for T‑Mobile.__ So far in 2026, the company supported preparedness and response for more than 200 incidents and planned events, working alongside first responders before, during and after emergencies.
That support starts with preparation. Long before disasters strike, T‑Mobile works with public safety agencies to strengthen coordination, test capabilities and prepare for real-world scenarios. In August alone, T‑Mobile joined emergency communications exercises in Hawaiʻi and at Texas A&M University, where teams practiced coordination and network restoration.
When emergencies happen, that preparation becomes critical — and so does connectivity. [T-Priority](https://www.t-mobile.com/T-Priority) gives first responders priority access to T‑Mobile’s 5G network, while [T-Satellite](https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/satellite-phone-service) extends connectivity beyond the reach of traditional cell towers. Behind the scenes, T‑Mobile’s [Self-Organizing Network](https://www.t-mobile.com/news/network/t-mobile-ai-and-resilience-make-5g-network-stronger) (SON) uses AI to monitor network conditions and make adjustments in real time. And when additional support is needed, T‑Mobile’s Emergency Response teams deploy portable network assets, coordinate with public safety agencies and provide on-the-ground technical support to help first responders stay connected when conditions are the most challenging.
As conditions improve and recovery begins, T‑Mobile continues working with public safety partners to restore connectivity and support impacted communities. Together, these technologies and teams help first responders stay connected when every second counts.
__Madison’s experience is a reminder that preparation often begins long before an emergency.__ The lessons she learned growing up in a first responder family continue to shape how she approaches everyday safety. Just as her father relied on preparation to serve his community, families build routines to keep their loved ones safe, and T‑Mobile works year-round to help first responders stay connected when it matters most.
