It’s been 20 years since Deutsche Telekom purchased VoiceStream Wireless and rebranded it T-Mobile USA, Inc.

At the time, an industry analyst noted, “Even if nobody in the U.S. might know what T-Mobile means yet, if they spend enough money promoting it, they will.”

Ha! Marketing money may have contributed to T-Mobile’s steady rise throughout the past couple decades, but it’s been much more than that.

T-Mobile has long dedicated its energy toward putting customers first. And in 2013, we debuted our #Uncarrier mission to change wireless for good by listening to customers and fixing their pain points. Since then, we’ve been connecting more people in more places than ever while working to ensure we don’t leave anyone behind.

Never was this more evident than last week in Starbase, Texas, where T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert and SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon Musk <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/un-carrier/t-mobile-takes-coverage-above-and-beyond-with-spacex">announced Coverage Above and Beyond</a>, an incredible vision to combine SpaceX’s constellation of satellites with T‑Mobile’s industry‑leading wireless network. This powerful pairing will soon provide customers nearly complete phone connectivity across most of the U.S.

T-Mobile is definitely flying high today as a brand, but we didn’t magically arrive here. VoiceStream Wireless PCS was established in 1994 as a subsidiary of Western Wireless Corporation. In 1999, VoiceStream ventured out under the umbrella of parent company Western Wireless. Then in 2001, Deutsche Telekom purchased VoiceStream before launching the T-Mobile brand on Sept. 4, 2002.

During college, I was selling wireless service at a Circuit City in Colorado when a VoiceStream representative recruited me to the company. I’ve been along for the brand journey from VoiceStream to T-Mobile to a <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/un-carrier/t-mobile-sprint-one-company">supercharged T-Mobile following the merger with Sprint in 2020</a>. There have been challenges along the way, but I’ve learned about the power of taking risks and saying yes to opportunities. Brands — and people — grow the most by stepping out of their comfort zones and taking on bigger challenges on behalf of their customers.

When the VoiceStream brand transitioned to T-Mobile, its “Get more” promise was clear: more minutes, more features and more service than any other provider. The magenta “T” became famous for value in our industry and for trust with our customers, who would get more than anywhere else for what they paid. It’s this storied history and strong reputation for value that set up T-Mobile for the future.

The brand evolution of VoiceStream to T-Mobile eventually led to the Un-carrier revolution, which has delivered time and again with life-changing moves like Coverage Above and Beyond. True to our roots, we continue to give customers MORE! Our best plan, Magenta MAX, now includes perks like Netflix on Us, <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/offers/t-mobile-apple-tv-on-us">Apple TV+</a>, and Paramount+ and ViX+ for one year, plus <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/un-carrier/cmo-mike-katz-tech-tips-for-modern-travel">in-flight texting and streaming designed for the modern traveler</a>. I vividly remember conversations we had leading up to the <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/press/t-mobile-makes-bold-un-carrier-moves">first Un-carrier moves</a>. The need for “pain-free wireless” inspired us. We knew wireless connectivity was important to people, but they hated the experience. Becoming the antithesis of what incumbents in this industry stood for and building a customer-first brand led to the birth of our identity as the Un-carrier.

And by understanding and appreciating our history, we’re equipping ourselves — through that now iconic magenta “T” — to serve as an even bigger and better force for good.

As a CX team, one core trait infuses everything we do.

This is Customer Service Appreciation Week, when we recognize T-Mobile’s amazing frontline employees and the passion they put into their work every single day. The theme for this year is “The Heart of Service,” which speaks directly to the resilience and love my Care and Digital team members, along with our partners in Retail and Network Engineering, show our customers through every interaction.

There’s no other word for it: This team is the heart of T-Mobile, and I’d like to give you a few specific examples that illustrate my point.

First is T.J. Fountain, a care manager for small- and medium-sized businesses who works in our Las Vegas Customer Experience Center. T.J. is something like a small-business whisperer: As a department manager, he oversees a team of four coaches, three leads and 40 Dedicated Experts, encouraging them to work closely with their customers and Sales partners all over the Western U.S. and to invest in their success.

Every business, he says, builds a trusted family over time. Not just loyal employees, but the tax attorney, the accountant, the vendors and other close allies they bring into the fold and rely on to help their business grow. T.J. and his Experts aspire to be a valued member of that family.

It’s a big responsibility, and it entails soaring above and beyond. T.J. and his team immerse themselves into industries as varied as transportation, healthcare, baking — you name it — to better understand the technology that’s best for each. They read trade journals, talk to peers in other industries, and develop a genuine curiosity and competency for their customers’ fields.

With this practical knowledge, T.J. and his team deploy their emotional intelligence. They offer business guidance with positivity, empathy and tact. After all, T.J. says, it’s called customer care for a reason: You have to care about customers. The result is what T.J. describes as a “professional concierge service for wireless.” Whether you need the latest tech or a sympathetic ear, his team has your back. This might include proactively checking in on the health of a customer’s business to ensure everything is running as smoothly as possible. Or helping a stranded customer connect with a retail store and replace a faulty device. Either way, it’s an all-in approach that stems from what T.J. calls an “attitude of servitude,” a phrase he learned at his first frontline Expert job back in 2018. I call it heart.

This drive to understand customer needs doesn’t stop at Care. Maddie Bach is a senior manager on the Digital Business team for emerging products. Based in Seattle, she’s a seven-year veteran of the digital side of T-Mobile Customer Experience. She and her team are focused on delivering T-Mobile Home Internet to existing and prospective customers. And to do that, she flexes remarkable left- and right-brain prowess.

Maddie starts by putting herself in the customer’s shoes. Which, as she points out, is easy because we’re all customers to someone. We all know how we want to be treated. We want long-term relationships, not anonymous transactions. Or we want total ease of use on our own terms.

Maddie’s group works closely with the Care and User Experience teams, poring over customer reports and results. This cross-team collaboration enables her to better grasp customer behaviors and expectations. How did they arrive at our website? Which page did they land on, and which page did they leave from? Where can we improve? The findings, she says, tell a story of customer behavior if you know how to read them.

Home Internet is a new product for us, so her team’s work is crucial in helping us learn what customers want and need with this service. For instance, new Home Internet customers recently asked for help setting up their service. In response, Maddie and her colleagues in Care, Digital and Retention developed an online hub that provides all the info they need to ensure a smooth and easy setup.

For James Holt, an elite Expert in account care who is based in Maine, improving people’s lives is the key to superlative customer service.

As a self-described “people pleaser,” James finds genuine fulfillment from his approach to care. He uses intentional phrases, questions and pauses that help put customers at ease and in the driver’s seat. With every call, James gives customers the tools to reach a resolution that they believe will genuinely improve their lives. And on the flip side, James is empowered to do whatever he can to help customers stay with us.

There’s a reason that James last year won the Kathy Woods Award, which singles out the top performer in Care. James intuitively grasps the fundamentals of customer psychology, and he uses them to help his customers feel heard and understood.

For example, he worked closely with a customer who had lost her job due to the pandemic and couldn’t pay her bill. James set her up on a special payment plan and then kept in close contact with her to follow her progress. She found a new job but needed extra time to stabilize her monthly budget, so James helped her get on our Hardship Payment Program. Again, he stayed in touch to provide the support, moral or otherwise, she might need. Now her account is in good standing, and she’s remained a loyal — and grateful — T-Mobile customer.

I hear stories like these and know that rather than feeling sold to, customers feel taken care of. They feel loved. And in return they love us back.

Our Un-carrier idea of serving customers is not a matter of numbers or statistics. It’s not a matter of sticking to a script or dodging responsibility. Caring for and serving customers is a matter of ownership, of pride, of connection. It’s a matter of heart. And that’s something we can all appreciate.

The Un-carrier puts people first, meeting rigorous standards established by International WELL Building Institute and 600+ public health experts to earn WELL Health-Safety Rating at thousands of locations

BELLEVUE, Wash. — July 1, 2021 — T-Mobile US, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a href="http://www.t-mobile.com/">TMUS</a>) is the first wireless provider to earn the <a href="https://www.wellcertified.com/health-safety/">WELL Health-Safety seal</a>, which is based on a new global rating for ensuring spaces and places adhere to science-backed standards that put health and safety first. T-Mobile achieved the rating for the measures it has undertaken at more than 3,200 retail stores, 22 customer experience centers and its Bellevue and Kansas City headquarters — locations that cover a total of nearly 16 million square feet! Starting now, customers and employees can look for the WELL Health-Safety seal at the entrance of most T-Mobile locations.

T-Mobile earned the rating and associated seal after third-party experts validated the company’s policies for keeping spaces sanitized and air-filtrated, communicating health and safety efforts, helping employees and customers prepare for possible emergencies and providing essential wellness services such as additional sick leave and vaccines. Company Announces Director Lawrence Guffey to Conclude His Term at Annual Meeting; Also Announces Departure of Board Member Stephen Kappes 

BELLEVUE, Wash. — April 12, 2021 — T-Mobile US, Inc. (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced that finance executive Bavan M. Holloway has been nominated to join its board of directors. If elected by stockholders, Holloway is expected to join the board and its Audit Committee after T- Mobile’s annual stockholders meeting on June 3, 2021. The company’s other 12 board members will also stand for re-election at that annual meeting.

Holloway has over 30 years of broad finance and audit experience in complex and highly regulated business environments. Holloway previously was Vice President of Corporate Audit for Boeing, among other senior finance roles. She was also previously a Partner at KPMG. Holloway holds a bachelor’s degree in Administration from the University of Tulsa and a master’s degree in Financial Markets and Trading from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She currently serves on the board for TPI Composites Inc. and the YWCA Seattle/King/Snohomish and previously served on the board of the Special Olympics of Washington. 

T-Mobile also shared that board member Lawrence H. Guffey will not seek re-election at the annual meeting of stockholders and that board member Stephen Kappes resigned from the board effective April 6th.

Today, the Un-carrier narrows its focus to just one town: introducing the T-Mobile Hometown Techover, a contest to find a single town in America that can showcase the power of the T-Mobile 5G network, that can be the 5G model for all other cities, towns, hamlets, burgs, parishes, villages or other similarly named community. The new kid in town T-Mobile has long been relegated to the urban and suburban core, not by choice but by necessity. Owing to a lack of the needed spectrum, T-Mobile simply couldn’t effectively compete in rural America. But upon closing its merger with Sprint one year ago, T-Mobile now has all the assets needed to bring its unique brand of wireless, and now home broadband, service to places throughout the country that desperately need a competitive counterbalance to incumbent service providers.

The people and businesses of rural America don’t have much history with T-Mobile. They likely didn’t get to experience the Un-carrier revolution that kicked off in 2013 and brought a wave of changes to the industry. Some innovations like no annual service contracts, global roaming at a reasonable price and unlimited data service have been adopted by the industry. While others like taxes and fees included, Netflix on US and a unique and popular customer service model called Team of Experts have yet to be matched. All of that amazingness just hasn’t been readily available in many parts of the country.

Something for everyone To make up for lost time, T-Mobile wants to show off the power of its 5G network and the breadth of its services by focusing this content on one single town. T-Mobile will bring its award-winning mobile phone service and newly launched T-Mobile Home Internet service to 100 households and give them free service for a year. We’ll throw in four 5G phones and an HD TV for each household, too.

But home wireless and broadband service isn’t the extent of what T-Mobile can bring to communities. To help close the digital divide, T-Mobile offers Project 10 million, an initiative to bring Internet connectivity to 10 million students. We’ll provide concierge service to identify and enroll households that fit the criteria. The winning town will also get free wireless service for all its first responder agencies, saving vital tax dollars, via a T-Mobile program that’s available to all municipalities called Connecting Heroes.

As a benefit for the entire community, T-Mobile will work with city leaders to identify a community gathering space that will benefit from being tech’d out. That may mean wiring a plaza for Wi-Fi service, decking out a community center with AR and VR gaming tech — an emerging space with tons of potential in a 5G world – or something else entirely. 

For the kids and parents in the town, T-Mobile, a sponsor of both Major League Baseball and Little League, will turn a local Little League field into a Magenta field of dreams. The field will even feature wireless technology called T-Mobile FamCam 5G that makes livestreaming local Little League games possible so friends and family who can’t make a game can still see it live or on demand via their smartphone, tablet or laptop. In addition to the field refurbishment, the town's Little League will receive support from the T-Mobile Little League Call Up Grant, which helps to cover Little League registration fees for families who may not have the means to do so.

Investing in communities T-Mobile also recognizes the impact that community revitalization can have on residents. T-Mobile has partnered with Smart Growth America (SGA), an organization that specializes in community planning and development, to help with a key part of the Hometown Techover — bringing a community project to life and maximizing its benefits. Having helped scores of smaller towns achieve economic vibrancy, our friends at SGA will help the Hometown Techover winner develop an old plan that never got off the ground or help them create a new project that will enrich the town’s development (i.e., town square, historic neighborhood, community center, etc.). The winning town will receive a $200,000 grant to help make its project a reality.
