Can international data charges get unexpectedly expensive? 

It depends. To add and use a second, local eSIM, your device must be unlocked. If your phone is locked, you can still stay connected internationally using <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/international-roaming-plans" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T-Mobile’s roaming options</a> or <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/international-roaming-plans/unlimited-calling-data-pass" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Passes</a> until the device becomes eligible for unlocking.
