Re: Connecting a Hard Drive to my Gateway Router
I was thinking of an ethernet connection but a good WiFi connection could work, at least for some use cases. But it's likely that there is at least one ethernet jack on your T-Mobile gateway. The more recent Minis may not come with ethernet, but I believe you could buy an adapter to plug into a USB-C port on the Mini. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend doing TimeMachine backups using 2 WiFi hops (MacBook to gateway and gateway to Mini) if you can avoid it, but it could work reasonably well with solid WiFi connections if the volume of files/data is modest.92Views0likes0CommentsRe: 5G SAGECOM GATEWAY - DISABLING WIFI
Thanks, that's very interesting. It has mostly positive ratings on the iOS app store, but one person reported needing to reset the gateway after turning off the 5gHZ radio recently. I've come to terms with the gateway operating as it does, having architected my home network around its limitations. So, at least at this point, I'm not adventurous enough to try something unsupported by the vendor. But it's encouraging that the app does exist, and I may revisit it later.157Views0likes0CommentsRe: Connecting a Hard Drive to my Gateway Router
I can't say for sure, but I believe it's highly unlikely. A remote TimeMachine backup destination is sort of a server, not simply a remote disk. FWIW, you could pick up a used recent Mac Mini, attach that to your gateway, and plug your external drive into the Mini.105Views0likes2CommentsRe: 5G SAGECOM GATEWAY - DISABLING WIFI
I wanted to do the same thing but determined that it is not possible. The current generation of gateways used by T-Mobile have extremely limited customization capabilities. I started a related thread a month ago or so, and there is at least one other recent thread about the lack of admin/config access.145Views0likes0CommentsRe: Access admin on gateway G4SE
I should probably have added that I'm using the 5688W gateway, which is the current entry-level offering from T-Mobile. I did talk to someone in tech support about my wanting admin access, and none of their three options allow that, so I'm guessing that the user access is the same on all models. The reply from nc1037 is correct with respect to the few things which you can change.315Views0likes1CommentRe: Access admin on gateway G4SE
There really isn't much of an admin area -- very few settings can be changed if you're comparing to a full-featured WiFi router or something like an ADSL modem from AT&T. If I recall correctly, you can enter the admin page from a browser by adding "/admim/ to the URL, but all it allows you to do is manually install a system update.343Views2likes2CommentsOptions using non-T-Mobile modems for home internet
I just signed up for the basic home internet service and it seems to be working fine. But I'm not happy with the modem they provided, the Sagemcom Fast 5688W Gateway because there is virtually no administration/configuration access. The main thing I'd like to do is turn off the WiFi radios, but it'd also be useful to be able to change the broadcast channels and create a list of approved MAC addresses. (I already have a mesh router system which I'd like to use for WiFi instead.) Are there devices on the market I can buy which would work with the T-Mobile service and give me more control? Just as a point of reference, my only other experience has been with the Arris products used by AT&T. They provide extensive options for configuring, including the option to turn off the radios. Thanks.241Views4likes2Comments
