Upgrade from a T-Mobile Account to a T-Mobile Metro Plan

I currently have a legacy prepaid T-Mobile account and I would like to upgrade to a better phone and the 25 a month Metro by T-Mobile Plan. Is it possible to do this or do I need to close the T-Mobile account and then open a Metro by T-Mobile account?
